I'm 11 days post-op.
I had a band placed by laparoscopy (can't spell that!!).
I have lost 20 lbs between 6/10 and 7/5.
I am feeling great and raring to go! But i'm not sure when I can start strength training and lifting weights, etc.
Anyone know?

I was told walking, walking, and more walking. I am not allowed to do weights for 4-6 weeks. Congrats on the 20 pounds.

I am 5 weeks out from surgery and I was able to start cardio at 4 weeks and then weight train at 6 weeks. I was told that any abdominal work should wait even a few weeks beyond that so to help the port settle and build some scar tissue. Just to be sure I would contact your surgeon's office and ask for clarification on his/her recommendation, just to be sure.

It felt nice to get on the cardio equipment last week, I am sure it will for you too!

Congrats on your success so far! Isn't it amazing how a little bit of success can light a fire for motivation?

I started walking a couple days out from surgery.  But i didn't get clearance for the gym and lifting until six weeks post op.  You want to give everything time to heal up, especially the spot where they attached your port.  Even now at 6 months post, a heavy core day results in port irritation for me.

I was told to walk, walk, and walk.

This is a definite Q for your surgeon!

Congrats!

Check with your surgeon first.....his/her recommendation should trump all other advice. I will tell you what I was allowed to do. I started using the treadmill and light weight exercises a few days after surgery. For 4 weeks no lifting was allowed over 20 lbs. After my 4 weeks I increased weights a tad on machines but not too much.
Best of luck to you....this is the best decision I have made concerning myself.

Agree with the others who suggest that you check with the surgeon. But here is what my rules are: Walking right away, eliptical, bike, interval training with no weights at 3 weeks, weights and running at 4-6 weeks and abdominals at 6 weeks.   I too am raring to go but just keep walking and trying to pick up the pace a little each time. I am now walking about 4km in 45 min so it is a good steady pace.

Thank you all for your suggestions!
I will check with the doc office. Not sure why I didn't...
I'm glad I didn't do anything too early. I did some extra walking and moved my arms more vigorously on Tuesday after my post. Yesterday I was dying! I could barely get out of the chair. I could only walk for about 12 mins. in the morning.
I guess that was a signal to not over do it.
I'll walk, walk, walk, and more walking till my doc says I can more on.
It is amazing how a little bit of success goes a long way!!!
thanks all!
