Help! Scared out of my mind- Surg July 1

It doesn't sound like you are mentally ready yet.  Talk to your surgeon about your fears.  This is major surgery and with ANY surgery things can go wrong, and things can go great.  You need to be comfortable with any surgery that you have, no matter what it is.  Sure a little anxiety is okay, but to be scared "out of your mind" doesn't sound like you are quite ready.

I was excited for my tool.  This surgery has a lot of potential problems and if you don't follow your surgeons' eating plan you can mess up your esophagus or upper stomach pouch and some people follow the plan 100% and have major problems.  And some people have no problems at all.  I love my band,  I'm a RN and I know there's a good chance of this "mechanical device" causing problems or failing.  I am thankful for all the people that do post about their problems and I can watch for complications.  Also my surgeon does yearly UGI's ( barrium swallow) and lab work.

I think  you need to give it a little more time and make sure you are 100% sure you are ready for WLS.

I wasn't scared before banding, but I've been frightened before another surgery and very nearly walked out of the hospital on the morning of the surgery.   But I knew I needed to go through with it for my eventual health and sucked up the courage and went through with it.. crying all the way into the surgery suite.

I wouldn't cancel yet, but I would try very hard to make an appointment to go back and talk to your surgeon some more.  If they're too booked to get in, then try to get into the psychologist/psychiatrist/whoever did your pre-op psych evaluation.  If you can't get in to either of these before your surgery, you could consider post-poning or rescheduling .. but keep in mind that if you put it to far off you'll need to go through some or all the pre-op steps again.

Ayanyac is correct about the weight causing health problems down the road.  Their path towards ill health involved diabetes.  My obesity brought me the gift of cancer.  The surgery that terrified me was to treat my cancer.  And I will forever regret letting obesity bring me to that point.. it has changed my life in ways that I wish had not happened.

You might can get your surgeon or PCP to prescribe some short term anti-anxiety meds.  I was given a prescription of 15 Xanax to get me through the 3 months before my cancer surgery.  I was very careful to only use them when absolutely necessary as they can be habit forming aka addicting.  But they are a god-send when used properly.

Hang in there, and do what you know inside is right for you.  When you come to the "right" decision, you'll know it.
