Has anyone ever had the LEEP Procedure done?  Well my question is, I am to have one done for pre-cancerous cells on my cervix, and I will be put under general ansthesia.  Do I have to have an un-fill first or just let the docs know that I have lap-band and for them to be careful while putting the NG tube down my throat??

Any advice or suggestions?

I only got a shot in my arm, or maybe IV. not intubated for this, they do it at the drs office if you have a clinic type office. You are numb but awake, not to worry,

I've not had a LEEP, but wasn't aware that they put an NG tube down for general anesthesia.   I'd have my band surgeon call and talk to your gyn/oncologist.

I had gyn cancer, but a different type.  I know you said yours is pre-cancerous, but if you're interested, there are two great support groups I can recommend.

One is hystersisters www.hystersisters.org  There's a cancer section there that I'm sure some of the other people have been through LEEPs.. there might even be bandsters on there, I don't know.

Another great support group is www.eyesontheprize.org.   When I was still in the precancerous stage, I joined that group and they helped me through everything.  Scared me to death a little, but in a good way.. it got me over the denial that I was having.. thinking I didn't really need surgery.

Hope the LEEP will work for you and get rid of the pre-cancer for once and for all.

Thank you both for the replies.  I don't know, maybe the don't put a tube down the throat for that.  If not thats great.  I am actually having this done in an outpatient surgery center.  I guess maybe I need to contact my doctor for some more info!

Thank you for the support groups as well..I guess the nurse on the phone didn't sound worried and she said it wasn't anything that we needed to rush on, but I'm actually not sure how to feel?  Should I be worried, should I be scared, should I be flipping?  I don't know..Cancer is a pretty scary word, so maybe I'm just afraid to think of it to much??  Does that make sense??

Thanks for listening!!!

It makes perfect sense.  Having a pre-cancer diagnosis can be very scary.  It's like.. ok, it's pre.. how long before it turns into the real thing or does it ever?  Can't I just go to sleep and wake up the next morning and it's all gone away?

The nurse isn't worried and isn't rushed because it's not her body.  :/

I was a basket case the 3 months between my diagnosis of hyperplasia with atypia (uterine pre-cancer) and surgery.  When I first got my diagnosis, I came home and de-frosted my deep freeze.  I know, sounds weird, but it took me several hours and I got to chop at the ice with a knife and cry and cry.  It was very therapeutic.

However you feel about it is the right way to feel for you.  It's a very personal journey.

I had a leep done quite a while ago and it was done without me going under...you should find out from your OB GYN...if you are of child bearing years, be careful...my LEEP caused an incompetent cervix. Get all the info you can.

First of all (((BIG HUGS)))....I am 38 and had the Leep about 3 years ago.  It is a very scary time....

Mine was done in my OBGYN office and I did not have the greatest experience!!   I was given a numbing shot on my cervix, which in itself was not pleasant.  The shot did not have time to kick in enough and I felt everything...It was aweful and then the Dr. had a hard time to stop the bleeding.

So if you can get knocked out for the procedure I highly recommend going that route!!   I have always had PCOS and have always been infertile, but was told by my Dr. that having the Leep really decreases the chances of getting pregnant, so you may want to ask about it if you want to have children.  It didn't matter in my case as my DH is pretty much sterile and we chose the adoption route to build our family.

I now have quite a bit of scar tissue built up, but don't seem to have any problems other then the yearly exam where I end up bleeding for 3 or so days, I am guessing from the scar tissue being scraped.

All tests have come back good since then, still have to make an appointment for this year, so this thread has been a reminder!

PS - I was also told that cervical cancer is a VERY slow growing cancer, so hang in there and chin up!

Thank you for your kind words.  I actually have 3 children and got my tubes tied about 6 years ago.  I too have PCOS, but have started getting regular periods since March (the same month as my surgery).

My doc said, "I would rather do it in the surgery center, because if by mistake we nick the inside of the vagial wall, we will be scraping you off the ceiling!"......My doc is a woman, so Im forever greatful, she is choosing the surgery center route as well!!

Just kind of scarey.......I talked to the nurse about going back to work, and she said I could go back the next day, so that made me happy as well...

anyway, thanks again!!!

Hugs to you...it is scary to hear you have any pre-cancerous condition.  I have had many ob-gyn surgeries (with and without general anesthesia, including my hysterectomy done with spinal anesthetic) and never had an NG tube.  Since they aren't operating on your gastric system, it shouldn't be necessary at all...
Hang in there and good luck!
