I had my RNY nearly 7 years ago and I am not miserable.  Far from it.  I have maintained a 115 pound weightloss.  I am no longer hypertensive.  My knees and back no longer hurt 24/7/365.  I am off ALL pre-op prescription medications.  I no longer dump and I can eat whatever the hell I want.  I stopped drinking alcohol more than a decade before my RNY, so I don't know if I would faint if I drank socially, or not.  But, I have been around many RNYers while they enjoyed an adult beverage and none of them ever fainted.  Where the **** did you get that piece of wisdom???

Bowel obstructions and hernias are a complication of ANY abdominal surgery.  How do I know this???  I am a nurse and have to go over surgical complications with patients all the time.  Anyone can get an ulcer.

I didn't give up being healthy when I elected to have my RNY.  I got healthy after I lost 100% of my excess weight.

You really are a tool.
I had my BAND nearly 3 years ago and I am not miserable.  Far from it.  I have maintained a 90 pound weightloss.  I am no longer hypertensive.  My knees and back no longer hurt 24/7/365.  I am off ALL pre-op prescription medications.  I no eat whatever the hell I want (lifestyle change).  I have been around many RNYers while they enjoyed an adult beverage and none of them ever fainted.

I didn't give up being healthy when I elected to have my BAND.  I am getting healthy after I've lost 80% of my excess weight.

To my band and my WLS: You really are a tool.

Wow, no, i can write 'em just fine (see end of posts at page 4 maybe?).

Your retort was one that I was attempting to contrast how many people can simply insert their own experiences and give the same evaluation...of course without the personal attacks and calling names. When you take it into a personal affront in here, it resembles high school antics and basically results in the loss of credibility to a post.

Take people for what they are. Think like my doggie over there to your left - think he gives a crap about what people think of him? Neither do I, but I am insterested in hearing their valid reports.

Just sayin..

Please, accept my apologies.  I have strep throat and an upper respiratory infection.  I'm on prednisone and it is making me more of a ***** than I usually am.

Naomi gets under my skin (I let her) and I reacted badly.

I do agree with you, in that, this WLS is a wild ride with as many outcomes as there are people having it.

And your doggie is cute.

While I'm not a physician nor do I know your health history, like the others,  I'm surprised that a RNY would be recommended for needing a 60lb loss.

I personally wouldn't do any malabsorptive surgery for that relatively small amount.

A band or a sleeve, whichever you're most comfortable with, would be the way to go IMHO.

Research both of the restrictive surgeries and choose which best fits you and your lifestyle.

Personally, I got a band 2 years ago, have lost very well and have no problems with pain with eating, vomiting, sliming, esophageal spasms, diaphragmatic pain, etc.   When I got banded, I didn't know about the sleeve and my surgeon didn't do them.  Would I have one now?  My best answer is maybe.  I"m a little uncomfortable with the idea of removing and discarding part of the stomach, but that's just me.

Good luck to you on your decision.

The above post is my opinion and my experience.  It's not meant to lessen or disparage any others opinion or experience.

Welcome to the lap-band board, where people who had bad experiences with the lap-band and those who never even had a lap-band come to try to prevent anyone from getting a lap-band. I guess everyone needs a hobby.
Anyway, I think you are wise to take a step back and look at all of your options. RNY does have some serious risks that someone who has a relatively small amount of weight to lose may not find acceptable. In the end, all WLS carry risks. You aren't guaranteed to experience them all (or any of them really) nor are you guaranteed to not have any side effects or complications. So, this needs to be something that you consider carefully and approach having had all of your questions answered. Don't let people with horror stories scare you away, do throughough research and, above all, talk to your doctor. If your doctor won't answer your questions, or pushes just one surgery no matter what your concerns are, choose another doctor.

Banded 03/22/06  276/261/184 (highest/surgery/lowest)

Sleeved 07/11/2013  228/165 (surgery/current) (111lbs lost)

Those of us who had bad experiences with the band are trying to help people who can still BE helped. Part of "research" is hearing the bad stuff. It's certainly not my "hobby." I hate it, actually... the whole, "trying to help people only to be constantly told how 'negative' I'm being." It's not fun for me... and yet I feel a sense of duty and a spirit of comeraderie. That's why I still come here.

Anyone who peruses the Revisions forum thoroughly will see the truth of the situation. And if they still choose to go forward with banding, then more power to them. But to ignore the "negatives" is shooting yourself in the foot.

Those of us with bad experiences aren't creating posts saying stay away from the band, etc.  When people ask for people's experiences and opinions on the band because they are researching, we give them what they are asking for.  Three years ago when I got my band I asked the same question and sadly nobody stepped up to tell me of these problems for whatever reason.  Had I heard then what people are hearing now, I would have looked into another surgery along with the band and been able to make an informed decision.

If you don't want to know then don't ask.  We only give what is being asked and then being labeled troublemakers and given grief.  It's not fun but I wish someone had done this for me three years ago.

The Lap Band board is to learn everything there is to know about the Lap Band. You just told the OP to " consider carefully ", but how can she possibly consider any WLS without reading everything out there be positive or negative ?

Please don't feel your only choices are band or RNY. If your insurance covers those, it is highly likely you can appeal for the surgery type you want.

If you do not want the malabsorptive aspect of RNY, consider the sleeve, VSG over the band.

The band has a high rate of post-op complications and often requires follow-up surgeries for repair, removal, or replacement. Please don't let anyone tell you these complications are only a result of the patient's compliance with the surgeon's plan. That is a complete lie. While poor patient compliance may indeed lead to complications, there is a high rate of complications even amongst the most compliant of patients.

My story is all over OH. Check through my recent posts or the Failed WLS board if you want to read it. Long story short, my band was a huge mistake. My sleeve is a dream come true.

Best of luck,
Lindsey
