How do I survive this 2 wk Liquid Diet - Starts Thursday (Band on 23rd)
Holly Hell! How am I going to be able to survive 2 weeks of liquids starting Thursday. When I had the RNY in 8/2002, my proceudre was open and we didnt have to do anything like that. Furthermore, I have never been a protein drinker, I was always able to eat anything after RNY.
My Band over Bypass (BOB) is scheduled for Thursday, June 23rd and while I don't fear the surgery, I do fear the liquids. And, when you think that I have to drink Liquids for the 1st 10 days after surgery as well, that is no real food till July 3rd (24 days, 3+ weeks). I think it would all be OK if I could have a glass of wine, but, I know this process is to de-fat the liver and make the organs smaller. I hear the first 3 days are the worse and I have warned my employees that I will be a ***** to be around by 5pm Thursday (I'm an event planner with a wine & cheese event Thursday night).

I'm thinking of just sleeping for 2 full weeks! LOL!

The liquid diet is tough, but doable. Just know that you are doing what you have to to have a successful procedure. Shrinking the liver is important becasue if it's too big they don't have enough room to work. The postop liquid diet is important for healing. I don't think it will be as bad as you think. You'll get through it, and will probably drop a few pounds which will be motivating. Good luck!
I will tell you that it really isn't that bad. Just keep yourself busy and it will not be that bad. The weight loss during this period was enough to keep me motivated. Just find a shake that you can tolerate. I went to Eggface's website and found really good protein shake recipes to add variety. Just remember that it is for your benefit and it only gets easier after this time period. YOu can do anything for three weeks. At least it isn't for life! LOL Good luck and my best wishes to you.

Since you asked, I found the 2 week process with liquids to be very cathartic. I felt great during and it wasn't too hard to stick to, for me. My doctor also said no alcohol during this time and for 4 weeks post-op. With your already having malabsorption with your rny, I would think wine would be an absolute no-no. Impaired judgement, on one glass of wine with RNY, can lead to more wine and before you know it you are worshiping the porcelain goddess and your band will be slipped or worse. Talk to your doctor about this...

I'm almost 10yrs post op, I drink wine and have sunk I was 6 mos post-op from the ray. I don't dump and wine has never been the issue it's been the food. I will not drink during my liquid phase, I was just saying that a glass of wine would make it "easier".
P.s. My doctor knows I drink and I plan to continue to drink wine after the band, in fact the office recommends it ESP. When tight.

I wish I had a magic answer for you! I am almost done with my 2 weeks on the diet. I think the sugar free jello and sugar free popcicles helped me out along the way. I have lost 16 lbs and I still have 3 days to go...then I have surgery on Friday. I did not get moody but I did pace the house a lot. I think this made me realize I was a "boredom" eater. Usually I would pace the kitchen and graze. Now I just get up and go for a little walk. Helps me out a lot. Drink lots of water...and add the suagr free flavors (crystal light) to them...keeps you full. You can do it, love!!! Good luck and stay strong. Its soooooo worth it!!
I heard the popsicles were a life saver! I am not a coffee drinker but heard that helps as well. I work from home, so, this will be a true test to my willpower and I live in Manhattan where you can walk to any corner and get the best foods life has to offer.
I have to admit though, I am looking forward to the weight loss. Im projecting 15-20 lbs in the 3 wks of liquids.

The two week liquid (carnation instant breakfast 3x/day for me) was the hardest. BUT YOU CAN DO IT! You will feel so much better about yourself when you do it. It gets you off the caffeine, the sugar, the other crap we put into our bodies everyday so when you are banded and it's imperative that you follow the rules to let your band settle, adhere and your body heal it's much easier. I feel ya on the wine - i missed that too - but the glass of wine I had 2 weeks after I was banded never tasted so good. Plus, I lost 19lbs on the 2 week liquid. You can do it. I remember, i did have one day that I cheated. It was my birthday, it feel right in the middle of the two weeks and I allowed myself to have a sensible (fish, potatoe, broccoli) birthday dinner - then I went right back on it.
Kelly,
I have a business trip, regional sales mtg July 14th and that is the 1st day I am allowed real food (10 days post-op liquids, 10 days post-op mushy) and then real food! I know last time when I had the RNY, I stopped Soda the night before cold turkey and when I tried it 6 mos out, it was revolting to the taste. Stayed off it till 2007 until Coke Zero was introduced! THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT!
