Listen to your Body
I'm glad I did. I'm currently 4 months post op and have been doing pretty well. I went in for my third fill on Thursday. We thought we were very close to my green zone so we only added .5cc in my band. I drank just fine afterwards and then went to work for a few hours. That's where the fun begins.
About 5 that evening I started getting indigestion. I never had indigestion except for when I was pregnant. I went home and decided to have one of those Campbell Soup in hands. The chicken and stars version for dinner. I only had about 2 oz when I started vomiting. I vomited all night long. It got to the point this stuff that almost looked like chewing tobacco was coming up. I then started to have acid reflux. I'm not sure how I got any sleep that night. I went to work the next day and tried to drink a Gatorade. I ran to the bathroom and the tar looking stuff came up. After that I tried getting ahold of General Surgery at the hospital I had my procedure done. With it being a 4 day and a military hospital it was closed. I work for a doctor ( optometrist) and she looked at me and told me to go to the ER.
I get there and start vomiting even more often. It got to the point where it was just clear. I finally get to the back and explain to the P.A that I just had a fill and think its too tight. They sent me to x ray to make sure I didn't have a slip. ( After she tells me that she knows nothing about lap band). A while later the Resident comes in after all my labs are drawn and IV started tells me that he thinks there is a blockage in my intestines somewhere. At this point I got a little freaked out because my husband is deployed and I don't want to do another surgery without him. He also said that he was trying to contact my surgeon to see what to do.
Some time later he comes in and says that a surgeon gave him directions on how to unfill me and he would have his attending help. ( Neither one have done it before.) They were just going to take out the.5cc that was put in the day before. Both doctor's looked very nervous. I kind of guided them on what to do. I made sure they gave me that lidocaine and the resident stuck me first with a curved needle. No luck. I told him that I normally get filled with a bigger and straight needle. He was done by this point and frusutrated and went to get an OLD ultrasound machine. The attending decided to try and after a few tries he got it with the help of the resident and that ultrasound machine. I had instant relief. It turns out I started vomiting my own saliva because I was just so swollen not even that had a place to go.
After my ordeal I told the doctors thank you and I was glad I could help them learn something new and went home exhausted and sore. I now have to follow up next week with my surgeon. The bright side is I lost 2 pounds. Not exactly the way I should though.
If you made it this far the moral to my story is Listen to your body it does in fact tell you when something is wrong.
