No more fills????

I am hoping somebody has some words of help for me because I am in a very scary place. I've had my band for aboot 2 and a half years and lost 100 lbs. I know that's great but I still have one hundred more to lose. I had great success the first year but then acid reflux really stalled my getting any more fills. I would wake up in the middle of the night coughing up acid. It was horrible. So I had to keep getting unfills. Sometimes the dr could get in a tiny fill and that helped a little. But I just returned from a visit from him the other day and we tried a very tiny fill. I started to burp and was told that I was probably going to have more acid reflux problems. So they removed the fill. So now what do I do? Does anybody out there have any ideas? I have 3 cc's in a 10 cc band. I am not even close to a healthy weight yet. I need to lose this weight.
Help please!

Some people are just really sensitive to fills. :( I am not sure what he will do but when my band gets irritated and I am having issues with acid I take it easy food wise and do a 14 day round of Prilosec (OTC) and avoid things that trigger the acid like spicey things, caffiene(a big one for me) , mint  etc and things usually calm down. Maybe try that but if your body is super sensitiveto the fills I do not know in the future what you could do besides either being super strict with your diet and exersize or revising to another surgery. Good luck to you and keep us posted !

Thanks, I need some good luck. I did try many different acid reducers, and they worked okay. It was just at bedtime. I'd cough up acid all night. I am trying to be strict with what I eat and am not having much success. That's why I went in for a fill. Maybe I need to try talking to another doctor.

I wish you the very best! Maybe getting a second opinion would help :) Give it a try!  I know it is frustrating to be in your shoes but hang in there . There has to be a solution !

Could you try elevating your head in bed?  I have read that sometimes that helps with reflux.  Good luck.

Adjustable Gastric Band on 05/12/11

Hi Pam,

What's the most you have had in your band? Do you have to keep getting unfills to have relief?

The most I ever had was 6 cc's in a 10 cc band. But I got over eager and pushed for more of a fill and that began the process of fill and unfill, fill and unfill. Although I got a little squirt of a fill a year ago and did fine. But when I went for a fill last week, they had to take the tiny fill out because I kept burping up the water they gave me to sip.

Adjustable Gastric Band on 05/12/11

Pam,

This is sounding familar to my situation, have you been checked for a slipped band? I did not have a total slip, my band was still anchored in one out of three sutures. This enabled my band to slip back and forth. I had it replaced 3 wks ago as well as a hiatal hernia repair. Since this replacement and repair I have not had any problems or reflux.

My Dr. did and EGD and barium swallow and did not see a problem other than my band was loose, had a fill and could not handle it and had an unfill! While on vacation I had a total blockage unable to eat or drink anything for several days. This is when I had to have my band replaced and the hiatal hernia repaired.

I'm back on track and ready to see my goal.

Yvonne

Just be careful to avoid being overfilled, or you might end up in my boat -- with a slip! I NEVER had any gastro problems (not even heartburn) but about two years ago I got a fill and then immediately started experiencing GERD symptoms. I've been filled, unfilled, and tweaked all over but it hasn't gotten any better. I now have a slip and have to figure out if I want a newer band version (mine is old, from 2006) or revise to a different WLS. Good luck.

Im sorry you are going thru this. Have they checked to see if you have a hiatel hernia?? I have been dealing with GERD for 13yrs and have been on everything. But when I got the band, they found that I had a hernia and fixed it. I haven't had any issues  yet with the GERD. Now I still take my meds for it until after everything has healed. But I still would have problems with GERD, even on my meds. Sometimes I would have to eat TUMS with the meds. I really hate that you have come so this far and have this happen. Maybe they should check for a hernia, so you can get back on the ball.
GOOD LUCK and HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER...
