Old lap band?

My surgery is on June 6th, Monday
Im told by my surgeon that he doesnt use the new realize band but instead has stayed with the original lap band.
Does anyone have that?  Does is cause complications.  what is the difference?
Also, I just started to take pilates classes and really enjoy them.  I know I have to wait 6 months or so before exercising, but does the old lap band restrict movement in the core area?

I have the Lap Band, and from what I've read on this forum, they're pretty much the same.  Any of the WLS could have potential complications.

As for the exercise,  I was allowed to begin my workouts after 6 wks.  Now, a little over 3 months post-op, I have a personal trainer who works me out pretty vigorously, including working on the core area.

Each doctor has different rules, so the best bet would be to call him and ask.  That's what they're there for.

Good luck with your surgery!

I have a 10cc allergan lapband.

This is what I've been told about the differences in the bands:

The the chambers that hold the fluid are arranged a bit differently in each band.  The realize bands are one long tube and the allergan has seperate pillows.  The realize band takes a little more fluid to get to good appetite dimming than the allergan band does.. as a general rule.  The realize band usually comes with a lower profile port, and it is "clipped" in place rather than stitched.

The differences are minor, IMO.  I'll bet you could google "comparison of allergan and realize bands" and get more information.

I didn't have to wait 6 months after surgery to exercise.  But no, there isn't any restriction to using your core other than what my doctor says "If it hurts, don't do it".   A little discomfort I'll work through.. pain is another thing and I modify or don't do that particular exercise.

I do or have done body pump, pilates, yoga, rpm, zumba, boot camp and any other class my gym comes up with.. lapband hasn't stopped me from any of them.

I don't think you have to wait 6 months to work out- check with your doc. The sooner the better in terms of successful weight loss. Good luck on your impending surgery!

Thanks all, thats good to know.
I guess Im getting a little anxious.  My surgery is Monday, June 6th.  Its been a very long process dealing with my HMO and they assign you a doctor (so I have no choice).

My Dr. only used the Lapband when I had my surgery 2 years ago.  He uses both now but he makes the decision.  They are both good and we have many people here with the Realize band as well as the Lap band.

I do pilates and only had to wait 6 wks for strenuous exercise.

Best~

Allergan has a great reputation ---- and I would have no concerns --- as long as he is talking about one of the current Allergan bands.

I would not have a 4cc band (older generation) placed ----

I did not have to wait 6 months to exercise.  I was asked to wait 6 weeks before I did any heavy lifting or abdominal work.

I was allowed (and encouraged) to exercise aerobically pretty much immediately post-op.

Kath makes a good point.  Make sure the band is not a 4cc one.  Those are older generation and not as desirable.   The current models are 10cc and 14cc I believe.
