I'm just getting started on this journey. I'm 5'5" and weigh 250 lbs. I went to a seminar yesterday and figured out  insurance and all that good stuff. More than likely my first appointment will be next week. I only have one question and it actually has to do with pre-op. The doctor is going to put me on a two week Optifast diet. I was wondering how that was going to be and what that is going to cost. haha I have never been on a liquid diet before but I am very sure it will be manageable...not that I will have a choice. :)

I'm sure someone who's been on the Optifast will soon see and post.

I did Medifast years ago and it wasn't too bad.  But after I came off it I was not a fan of milk for a long time.

I was lucky, my surgeon didn't require a pre-op diet.  I'm not sure I would've been able to do one.

I'm a milk fan now so I am sure, taste-wise, I should be okay. Its just having no solids and how your body adjusts to it...I'm just a curious gal. I will find out soon enough. :)

I'm just finishing up my 1 week clear liquid diet....OMG.....one more day to go.  I did cheat yesterday and had a 1/2 cup of milk.  I just couldn't stand it no more...I love my milk too!!!

You'll be just fine.  Just think positive...that has gotten me through my week.  Barb

I just had to reply because I was YOU 5 months ago!!  Though I am 5'6" (I've got that whole extra inch) I am (was) 250# and my goal is 150#, it was just too incredibly similar.  Congrats on your decision and though I didn't have to do the Optifast before surgery, I know you'll be able to because you can finally see that goal!  Good luck!

Thank you for the input and the boost in confidence that I will be able to pull it off. I am getting very excited. We are working out all the starter stuff now and I will be seeing the Dr very soon!:)

It's important to follow the preop diet. It is meant to shrink your liver. The surgeon needs to lift your liver to work, if it's too big there isn't enough room and they can't put in the band. You are taking a huge step towards a healthier you. Good luck!

I'm just getting started on my weight loss journey.  I remember the first time I heard the word obese, I was 8.  I'm now 36.  I haven't decided which of the two insured options to choose, band or bypass.  I'm seeing my PCP in a week and I'm leaning towards which bariatric center, but I don't know which procedure to go with.  I'm 5'4" and tonight I weighed 258 pounds, my heaviest to date.

Help?

Welcome, I had my surgery with Dr. Bovard in Nov 09.  I can't remember how much the optifast cost I am thinking around $200 but not sure.  You will have your choice of flavors of shakes and soups.  I found the soups to be nice at dinner time and I blended my shakes with ice.  I can't say enough about Dr. Bovard and his staff they are so wonderful.  My life has changed so much I have lost 99 pounds with the lap band and 35 before. Email me if you have any questions.

Congrats on your success with the surgery and sticking to it all! 99 is amazing!  I am not looking to lose it quick so I am happy to hear it comes off slow. I am hoping that my skin will recover for the most part. I know it wont be perfect bc I am 30...if I was younger I would hope it could recover more. lol
