There is a risk of blood clots with any surgery.

You should speak with your surgeon about your particular risk factor -- and make an educated decision about whether you want to proceed --- of if there are things you can do to minimize the risks.

There's a risk with immobility, ( not moving )
SCD compression stockings can be used after surgery and frequent short walks will help decrease your risk. Also they can give Lovenox shots sub q ( blood thinner shots in the fat on your abdomen, and the needle is tiny and doesn't have to go very far in ) They do everything possible to prevent blood clots.

So any surgery or hospitalization poses an increased risk.  Just being obese and being on a long flight or a long car ride can increase your risk for blood clots.

I was told that that is why they get you up soon and you walk every two hours to avoid them

I agree with Kath, all surgeries have a risk factor. Most Dr's will use blood thinning meds if they feel it necessary (mine did, anyway). Also they used calf pressure cuffs to help circulate the blood.

Mari  Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels!

Yeah there is with any surgery.  I had mine done on the 17th and they had wraps on my legs to keep my blood flowing properly.  Then as soon as I was awake enough they had me walk every two hours.  Only thing that sucked was I didn't get much rest in the hospital.  Now they have me try to walk 5-10 mins every hour I'm awake just to keep it flowing.

They also injected me with a blood thinner.  So all in all, they do every measure possible to prevent blood clots from forming.
