Question about cortisone injections

I have been dealing with chronic pain in my left hip since a car accident in 2002. While the Tramadol I take daily manages the pain fairly well, I am unable to sleep on my left side for more than 20 minutes.  The only time I was ever able to tolerate it was when I had a cortisone injection from my previous pain doc about 5 years ago. I seem to remember the effect lasted maybe a month.

It hasn't been that big of a deal since I can sleep on my back or my right side...HOWEVER, I've developed painful bursitus in my RIGHT elbow from all the years of sleeping only on my right side. sigh.

It  was a funny sight to see me tucked into bed these past few years.  I have a tv pillow behind my back and another tv pillow at my feet to elevate my right leg (artificial knee), and a memory foam cushion wedged by my left hip to alleviate the pressure there.  Now I have to add a cushion for my elbow??  I feel like a baby in a cradle LOL

Well, since we just recently invested in a   4inch memory foam pad (Temper-pedic knockoff) that covers the kingsize bed, I'm NOT waking up with aching joints anymore...but STILL can't sleep on my left hip.

My QUESTION (i know...finally) is, if I go to my pain doc and start getting cortisone injections, will it cause weight gain?    I don't want to slow down my weight loss any more than it is.  I don't want to be in pain either.  At SOME point, I WILL get a hip replacement but my orthopedic doc who sees me once a year for xrays says its not necessary yet.   AND, if the shots only help out for a month, is it worth it (or healthy) to get a shot every month??

Thanks for any help!

A cortisone injection should not affect your weight. It is a tiny amount injected into the affected area.

I've had the injections since my surgery and had no problems with weight gain from the procedure.  Now, notice I didn't say I hadn't had weight gain.  But the injections certainly had nothing to do with that.

But I don't know how often they can give you the shots.  Sometimes it takes a few weeks to feel the relief and some people feel it almost immediately.  I never felt it at all.

Check with the ortho and see how often you can get the injections and for how long.  You may find the sleeping position with all the comfy pillows might not be so bad after all.

I've had two in my wrist and one in my knee. They f*cking HURT like hell, but didn't cause any weight gain.

I agree with the others, I had them in my back several times after banding and had no problem with them. Well except that they didn't work for my back.

thanks so much  for the replies. I guess I got it in my head that because they were STEROIDS, my weight could be affected.   Thanks for sharing your experiences.  I will talk this over with my pain management specialist when I see him next.
