well i got approved as well but changed my mind only to get the lap band. im decided maybe the gastro bypass would be better for me, i had a question how did you start to lose weight and if you dont mind me asking how much did you need to lose?

You have to do what is right for you. I started out wanting the LapBand and then decided I would try to lose on my own. I worked hard, lost quite a bit of weight and with months of not dieting - I gained it back and more. That had actually been the story of my life, so that was when I decided to get the Band and I've never looked back.

Gastric is good for some people, no doubt about it, but for me Lap Band was what I wanted because I knew it would always be adjustable and here I am 3 years post op, still losing and still working my band. I have friends and family who had gastric at the same time I had my band placed and they are struggling after gaining 50 and 75lbs. It seems their gastric is no longer helping them. They didn't learn how to eat properly, they totally relied on the side effects of overeating and eating the wrong foods to lose weight. IT worked, they lost and they lost very much faster than I did. But now that it's been 3 years plus, they are gaining and working as hard as ever to learn those lessons they never did.

The LapBand is not the easiest or fastest WLS out there. IT's darn hard work, but it's something that can be adjusted as you go and you have to learn the lessons or you simply do not lose. No malabsorption here.

Good Luck! I appauld those who can lose weight without WLS - and I appauld those who can keep it off!

that is what i am nervous about keeping it off or even keeping going.. i have done it many times but i figured that i have to change no matter what so why not just do it.. i went to a bariatric dr that assist in weight loss without the surgery.. i just felt really bad after going through the waiting (6months for the insurance) and waisting peoples time.. i haven't told my dr yet.. my surgery was scheduled for june 2nd

thanks for your input...

Well, you have a couple of weeks.  Maybe you could just postpone it and see how things turn out.  Don't feel bad about wasting people's time and energy!  It's your life and your decision.  There should be no shame in whatever choice you make.  I went almost 2 years with being very ashamed of getting the LapBand.  I felt I should have been able to do it myself, but I weighed over 482 lbs and I needed help.  The LapBand was and has been only a tool for me.  I've had to do the work - it's helped me get to a healthy weight where I am not on my BP meds or my PCOS meds or my high cholesterol meds!  I have the energy to be active and happy.  I did it for my life.  I knew if I hadn't done something I wouldn't have lived much longer.

It's your life and your decision.  Don't feel bad about doing what you feel you must do.  Either way - I wish you the best!

Hello, I read your post and it is so hitting home, I was so excited at first and I probably would have a surgery date by now, but I am really having different thoughts , I ve already seen the therapist twice and I still have another appt next month. I told him I thought I was ready but I am so not sure now. I too have started losing weight on my own, it is a start. You did what you felt was right for you and I think it is great you spoke up. I just hope that I am that strong. I go back to my surgeon on monday and I am really anxious about the appt. Good Luck on your weight loss.

thanks you too... It has been a battle for sure for 30 years i have struggled and when i first made the decision to have the surgery i saw hope until i started to realize it isn't a magic formula.. that is all up to me whether i have the surgery or not... i just know that i can never go back to eating the way that i have if i want to be successful... last night i went to bed crying because i know it is all up to me... i have lost 23 pounds so far and have 87 more to do at least.. thats my goal... i just lean on God to help me and eat from the table that he had prepared for me and not turn to food

I definitely agree you have to do whats best for you! But keep in mind statiscally people who lose weight on their own have a 96% chance of gaining it back, LapBand 40%, RNY 40% and DS 15%. So keep in mind that unfortunately the number are against you when you are doing it alone.

And I do agree that you should take the next few weeks to make certain before you definitely cancel your surgery date. No matter what you have to be 100% comfortable with what your are doing!
