plane travel 2 weeks after lap band
I'm having my procedure the 12th-May. I was really hoping it would've been in March-but insurances was taking their sweet time. Really nervous about the big changes. But...my dad is having a surprise bday party for my mom. i live in Oregon, they live in Chicago. I get air sick , not all the time, but because I live in central oregon and don't want to drive 3.5 hours to Portland I'm stuck taking a small plane then get on a jet. It's her 60th, also my brother turn 30 and my sister 20-so it's a big deal. Huge party huge!!! Lots of alcohol, dancing, and we'll be on a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan. Did I also mention I get sea sick??? So...the party is set for the 28th. 16 days after surgery. With surgery being so close, will throwing up cause any issues?? Also if anything should happen I'll be away from my doctor...Do I go?? should I stay?? Timing stinks!!!!!
I would think you would really want to avoid throwing up that soon after surgery. If the are going to put some fluid in your band - which some do others just prime it and then leave it empty until the first fill you can experience tightness from the pressure of air travel.. I flew from Canada to Puerto Rico 5 months after surgery to take a cruise and I couldn barely eat anything all week - lost 7 pounds in 1 week. My nurse said when she flew close to a fill she couldn't even drink water while on the plane - long and short is it's normal to feel extra restriction for a day or 2 after flying. Talk it over with your doctor - good luck!

You absolutely need to avoid vomitting after the band --- especially while you are still healing.
You need to speak with your surgeon -- see if you can get a prescription for anti-nausea medication.
Then, you need to have a good plan for maintaining YOUR plan of eating/drinking yourself during the trip.
You should not be having alcohol 2 weeks post op, or eating most of what they are eating -- so, if you need to pack protein powder, or stock up on soups, mushies, soft foods when you get there --- make sure you have ap plan.
Not only can it be bad for weight loss, but it can be really bad for your healing process if you allow yourself to go off of your plan because you are 'celebrating'.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I thought exactly the same thing. I don't mind being on a restricted diet, just wanted to be there for my family. My dr seems to think I should be fine-but I didn't tell him at the time I have a tendency to get air and sea sick. I used to get a scrip for scopolamine patch, but they've taken that off the market, for whatever reason. I've been lucky the past few times to not get air sick, but you just never know. I'll ask!! thanks!!!
