Upper Leg Numbness

A couple days after being banned, I started to feel numbness and a tingle in my upper left leg. It is numb all the time, doesn't really hurt and I can walk just fine. It really starts to tingle when I lay down on my back. I talked to my doctor today and was told that this is common after the lap-band and should go away but I have yet to encounter anyone with the same problem. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, is it gone?

I've never heard of that being common after any surgery...but if you develop redness, heat or the numbness increases, I would go to the call the doctor and perhaps go to the ER.

I've had this in my right leg since coming home from the hospital, and as I understand it it's a product of the anestesia.  The same thing occurred when I had my gallbladder out.

Your post is music to my ears. Thank you for sharing. I feel a bit better. I just had surgery on April 27th. Hopefully it will go away soon. It's not really preventing me from doing anything it just a bit annoying and a bit harder to fall asleep at night. Thanks again.

I've never experienced this myself, but this topic was just brought up on the Smartbandsters list.

This is what someone posted in response:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/meralgia-paresthetica/DS009 14

Meralgia paresthetica is a condition characterized by tingling, numbness
and burning pain in the outer part of your thigh. The cause of meralgia
paresthetica is compression of the nerve that supplies sensation to the
skin surface of your thigh.

Tight clothing, obesity or weight gain, and pregnancy are common causes of
meralgia paresthetica. However, meralgia paresthetica can also be due to
local trauma or a disease, such as diabetes.

In most cases, meralgia paresthetica can be relieved with conservative
measures, such as wearing looser clothing. In severe cases, treatment may
include medications to relieve discomfort or, rarely, surgery.

Thank You! It just started 2 day ago.  It just seem strange to me since I never had it before the Lap-Band surgery and I weighed about 30 pounds more. I don't have diabetes and I never wear any type of tight clothing.

I'm not panicking about the tingling I'm experiencing - if it is still occurring on Friday I'm going to ask my surgeon about it, but there are no symptoms to suggest a clot or anything serious so I'm just ignoring it.  One more thing feeling achy/weird isn't going to kill me at this point!  I was banded 4/28 so it sounds like we're going through the same things! :)

I am so glad that you posted this....  I have had my band now for 5 weeks and my upper left leg has the same feeling that you are talking about.

I have had this issue since my surgery in March 2008. The spot has gotten smaller but still there. My doctor said just what people did above - it is caused by a combination of you laying in 1 position (my surgery took around 3ish hours (what do I know I was out :P) for too long and the anethesia. I've gotten used to it but sometimes it has an unscratchable itch if I lay on that side too long.

Hi - I was diagnosed with meralgia Parathesis back in 2003 when I had to be hospitalized with blood clots in my lungs.  The doctor stated that it was due to me being overweight, but I couldn't help but notice that it didn't start bothering me until I was stuck in a hospital bed for a couple of days.  None of this was related to my lapband which I had placed in 2009.  I have noticed that as I have lost weight, I do not experience much symptoms anymore.
