How to add extra steps into your day
I'm participating in a Challenge to walk 10,000 steps a day for one week through a local Hospital based fitness group. Today they emailed out some suggestions on how to add extra steps to your day. I thought I'd share them with the group. Most of them we already know, but a reminder now and then won't hurt. I changed one of them just a little (they suggested walking every aisle in the store.. for me, that would end up with processed foods jumping into my cart!). P.S. The first one is the main thing I did for exercise the first 7 months after banding.. but I also incorporated a few others. * Walk a dog... if you don't have a dog, join a friend who does, or borrow a neighbor's dog * Take stairs * Park in back of the parking lot * Get up to change channels * Weed your garden or flower beds * Walk to co-workers desk instead of email * Walk around while making a phone call * Take a lap or two around the mall before shopping * Plan a walking meeting * Participate in walk-a-thons * Take kids/ grandkids to the zoo * Visit a nature trail * Mow your yard with a push mower * Instead of a coffee break, take a quick walk * Vacuum your house * Dance * When you watch TV, walk on treadmill * March in place during commercials * Don't use the shuttles to get to work, use your feet * Walk the perimeter of the grocery store at least once, before putting anything in your shopping cart. * Wake up 30 minutes early to walk and view the sunrise * Always return the shopping cart... inside of the store * Do not use a cart while golfing * Visit a museum * Take a group fitness class

Thanks for posting this! 10,000 is challenging. I was doing this last Fall, but when the weather got nasty, I found it difficult to get all those steps in. I walked 90 minutes at the mall before the stores opened up this morning and I was thinking I should have worn my pedometer. I love walking with my DH and our 2 Golden Retrievers. I always say that "Jack" our male golden, is like my personal trainer. Always wanting to go faster and farther. They walk with me at least 5-7 hours a week, so they are in good shape also!
Thanks for the list! I am fostering a pup now so it gives me a reason to be active!
