Our god-daughter was diagnosed bi-polar after her RNY and she has had so many problems...we all knew she had a psychiatric disorder, but not specifically which one...it would have been a good thing to have it diagnosed and treated prior to surgery.
Hang in there Shelley!

I am bi polar as well and have generalized anxiety disorder and OCD . I have been stable for years though. The issue is probably whether or not you have been stable in the last 2 years. You may have to prove that thru your own psych Dr w/ their notes and your med records etc. I would ask what they need specifically to prove you have been stable and go from there.

I think it would help if you submit an letter from your primary Psych doctor to your surgeon stating that you are stable under his/her care. This gives the surgeon peace of mind. If your psych issues are controlled with use of medications, make sure your surgeon is aware of all of this. The fact that you have a diagnosis and is under the care of a Psychologist or Psychiatrist, should be a factor in surgery approval. The dangerous psych issues are the ones that haven't been diagnosed or treated yet, and yours have been.

I have severe depression, generalized anxiety and panic disorder. All of these were disclosed when I went through my pre surgery psych eval. They primarily just wanted to see a regular history of med and psych rechecks and that I was generally stable. Honestly though it didn't seem to be a big deal at all. They concentrated more on my feelings towards food and my supposrt system.
You can always check around for other surgeons. I went to seminars for like 4 of them before I chose one.

I tend to agree with what the other posters were saying...
If you have been seeing a Psychiatrist regularly and been stablized for 24 months, they should be able to write you a letter...I do not see why this would not be acceptable to the surgeon..
You can always clarify later if need be...
From what people post, many of us have some anxiety, depression or other such issues.
The eval for the surgery is not to determine a diagnosis but to guage your expectations for the surgery and if you will be able to maintain after..
If you have not been following up, that might be more of an issue...
Good Luck
