I've had problems with esophageal dysmotility in the past, check out this wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esophageal_motility_disorder

There is a section on here about spasms.  Of course this is a wiki page so it's better to get a professional opinion, but it's a good start.

I haven't personally, but my husband who is almost 64 has had them since his 30s.  The first time it happened I thought he was having a heart attack.  He is not overweight, exercises (just ran a half marathon last weekend) nor does he have reflux, but he gets esophogeal spasms from time to time, especially if he over eats, especially if it is spicy, high fat food.

I have a nephew who gets these as well.  It usually happens to him if he eats too fast.  He has to really slow down and pay attention to his eating....It's hard for  a growing kid to do when he's hungry!!
