The day after my surgery a nurse came into my room to remove my IV. She says to me "have you tried diet and exercise?". SIGH.

This is what I would have said.....

"Diet and exercise???  OMG!!!! where were you before I had this surgery....duh how stupid of me not to try that first.  Next time please enlighten someone BEFORE they have surgery.  Thanks for nothing!!!"

I was too groggy from no sleep that night and too gobsmacked to make a smart reply.

How rude she shouldn't be working with bariatric patients.

AGREED!!!!!!!

My goodness, how stupid of her.   I'm willing to bet she treats all of the WLS patients this way, and says things when nobody else is around.

I'm sure in front of people she's the ideal nurse.

What an ignorant, narrow minded *****

I would report her to her supervisor and my dr. She needs a talking to because I am sure you are not the first nor the last person she will speak to like that.

She obviously has no concept of how banding works or she wouldn't have said that.  I would call the hospital and ask for the nursing supervisor let them know.  She shouldn't be working with anyone who is concious!

If they send you an evaluation please fill it out. Otherwise call and find out the supervisor's name and ask to speak to that person. Where I work, they take those evaluations very seriously. That was not an appropriate comment from that staff member. Are you sure if was an RN or could of it have been an aide/tech? A lot of times patients don't have a clue in the hospital who is who. The techs maybe have had 75-150 hours of education versus a RN who's had years of training.

Just read your post again about removing your IV, so I guess it was a nurse. That is just sad.

NICE!  Right before my surgery I had some blood drawn...I was in my gown and had an IV and everything and the tech drawing blood asked me what I was in for...she knew it was either AGB or bypass.  When I told her, she told me how she used to weigh 350 or some large number.  She was quite thin and since she was telling me and I was having surgery, I just assumed that she had had one of the surgeries.  So I asked.  NOPE - She told me she did it the "RIGHT WAY".  She walked it off and ate right.  WHATEVER!  I just said ...Well good for you, I'm going to do it the right way too!  People are so DUMB!

I'm am so sad to hear that health care workers are making these comments.  So unkind and unprofessional.  Although I have to say my PCP had nothing good to say about the band and he had the answer for me when I went for my first 6 month supervised physician diet visit....  are you ready.... well ... just eat 500 calories less a day!  TaDa!  I have never seen the guy since and I would love to rub it in his face that gee the band is working!
