itchy wounds

I am Day 5 out of surgery and my wounds, or the dressings, are itchy. Is this normal or could it be a sign of infection? I don't feel hot.

thanks - I pulled the dressings off and they are all red and rashy. The wounds themselves look OK. I think I am allergic to the dressings! The nurse said they can come of day 5-6 so no big deal that they are off now.

quite normal ----- itching usually signals healing

I was not allowed to put any type of lotion/cream on it --- but I found that ice helped ease the itching.

I also took benadryl to help me sleep during recovery --- and that helped with the itching.

Hi - the itchiness of my wounds drove me nuts, too!  I saw my surgeon 10 days after, and he suggested cocoa butter or Vitamin E oil.  I chose the cocoa butter.  Hawaiian Tropic has an after sun cream with cocoa butter in it, and it worked great.  But I would wait a few more days.  Maybe even a little Neosporin after a shower might help.
