OT- Update on DH's interview

Update: Well ..Crapola.  Thanks for the prayers...He's going to need the boost now.   He just called me and told me that the company is not hiring after all and is just going to put his application on file. Sigh. They have alot of nerve for jerking him around...b/c on the phone, the guy said he WAS trying to get a third truck going and needed to hire a new guy AND when he gets there, the interviewer kept him waiting for 30 minutes past the appointment time.

Well, at least I'm glad we're not kept waiting and wondering if he was hired or not so now he can just go down the list to the next hopeful paramedic outfit.

I'm wondering if his cancer has anything to do with it.  Are people afraid to hire cancer survivors?  Jeeez.

Thanks for listening. ..and thanks for the prayers.  He aint giving up yet. Just disappointed today.

That might very well have been why he didn't get the job. Employers discriminate for MANY reasons!

You might have someone else call there and pretend to be looking for employment and see if they suddenly have a position available?

and then what? LOL  Either way, he still won't be hired there.  Thanks for the reply, Maria.  He's okay about it so I feel  the prayers helped.

I'm a supervisor and I have seen first hand how people discriminate against people when just browsing through resumes...not even interviewing yet.

I have seen very illegal practices at work...

not hiring someone because they graduated college in the 70's...labeled too old

not hiring someone because their name is too weird....labled too ethnic

Now bosses see different things.  You tell me he is a cancer survivor...I see a man with perseverance and determination.  someone else sees a potential sick person that will need FMLA.  Same with fat people and old people....they see people with potential illnesses.  When you go on an interview you want to appear as young and healthy as possible.  If I were interviewing for a job I would even be hesitant to mention I lost 140 lbs.  They might mark that against me...instead if they ask me about anything personal I am proud of I would mention I am training to run the 5K (that screams health and well-being).  I would also try to find a way to let the interviewer know I have no small kids at home....(I won't have to call into work for sick kids)  I don't want come out to say kid's age because you don't want to age yourself but to say something like "now that I have the house to myself I have more time to read or garden".

All of these things are illegal for interviewers to base their decisions on but believe me they base their decisions on these things all of the time.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply!   He's found the application process tough to account for the time off. He has credentials up the wazoo but not the actual experience.  He was a 9th and t0th grade Biology/chemistry teacher before deciding to go back into emergency medicine.  BOTH fields can grind you up and spit you out,IMO!

That's too bad Jolena, I'm sorry.  Doesn't sound like they are very nice people if they yank people around like that...that said; Is it obvious that he had cancer??  Does it affect his ability to do his job?  If they couldn't tell by looking at him, there was no reason for him to share that information during the interview process.  Even if they knew, if it doesn't affect his ability to do his job, it is discrimination and a complaint (at the very least) could be filed, jerk them around a bit!
Hugs to you both!
