PCP...SMDH!!!

My hubby went for a check up yesterday with our PCP. He goes once a month to check his HBP because they can't find the right meds that will work for him.
Well anyway he told the Dr. that he was having his band surgery on the 27th of April. You know what this Dr. told him...YOU SHOULD NOT GET THE BAND, YOU SHOULD GET THE BYPASS. THE BAND IS NOT GOING TO WORK FOR YOU...
Now Im PISSED because he doesn't know anything about WLS. If that was the case our surgeon would of said something to my husband about what would be helpful to him. My husband has to lose 235 lbs, but he is a very determined person. That was like a big SMACK in the face for him. Dr. couldn't even give some sort of support.  I know I have said it before, my hubby has never had surgery before. This is a really big thing to him. I think the WLS  would be the biggest accomplishment in his life...

Has anyone ever had an insensitive PCP???

I HAVE HIS BACK FOREVER AND ALWAYS!!!

The success rate of RNY in the beginning is more successful so the doctor tho he might not be a WLS doctor he probably feels this surgery is most successful... because of instant gratification

RNY people lose a ton of weight and rather quickly it's successful it just wasn't something I wouldn't consider for me when choosing WLS surgery...

Losing with the band takes a lot effort because we still have free will.. we can eat around our band we can digest sugar... etc.. the doctor might not know how determined your husband is.. but don't look at it as him putting your hubby down ..

My doctor (since 1981) was never very empathetic towards my efforts at weight loss until his daughter (two years older than my daughter) became obese as an adult...then he started investigating ways to help her and his patients, such as myself who have struggled with obesity.  When I told him I was getting my band, he was enthusiastic and optimistic and is happy with the progress I have made to date...as someone on the main board said this morning, knowledge is power...help educate your hubbie's doc and he will come around.

At my first 6 month supervised physician visit with my PCP,  he basically said the same thing.  He told me that all I needed to do was to eat 500 cals less a day!  Wow!    I've never gone to him again and found a new PCP that was supportive.

I know that sucked to hear especially this late in the game . Did his PCP not have to supervise a diet or fill out forms ? Mine did.  He actually said the band would be best for me but i only had like 100 lbs to lose. I have always thought that typically when someone had as much to lose as your hubby ( that felt really bad to type I do not mean any harm by it) that they encouraged you to go with another surgery b/c the wt comes off easy and fast and they do lose more usually .This happened to my cousin actually . However they are doing more band surgeries on ppl who need to lose more so that does not mean it cannot be done. Hard work counts for alot!
I would be interested in knowing WHY the PCP thought the band would not work . Is it maybe his eating habits or something? or maybe something metabolically ? I would have your surgeon follow up and make sure but if it is just the sheer amount of wt he has to lose even if he does not get off every single lb he has the potential to be alot happier and healthier in the long run. If the surgeon still thinks it is an ok idea then I might look into a new PCP. He may just not know much about the band.  Good luck to you guys !

He did do a 6 month supervised diet with this dr. and he did do the paper work. He told me and hubby the band would be great for us as well. Now its NOT.
My hubby picked up 15 lbs because of the HBP Meds he is taking. It makes him swell really bad. He has been on 4 diff meds since Dec. Also he has sleep apnea and that can make you swell as well. We have seen first hand what the bypass had done to some ppl. He just didn't want it. Yes, you lose wt fast, he doesn't want to lose the wt fast. He wants to lose at a moderate rate. The bypass just  has too much extra with surgery. He just wants him to lose the wt fast and not looking at the long term affects of it.
I just think its something he didn't need to hear right now. If it were me, I would of though DAMN I'm doomed to FAIL!!!

Thanks

My PCP was concerned about my choice to get the band because she just wasn't that up on the different surgeries.  They know that the RNY has the fastest results and with 235 lbs to loose, most would probably point him toward that route.  But, if you think he will do the maintenence necessary and can have some control over what type of foods he eats and how much, then he can succeed with the band.  He just needs to fully understand that it's slower and probably more work over all.

Even Dr.'s need education if they are not Bariatric Surgeons.

I had two different doctors tell me I would only lose 50 lbs with the band.

I love seeing them now that I've lost 190.  :)

Tell your husband that his PCP is misinformed and that he CAN do this.
