I keep burping up hot saliva after my meals
Good Morning Jerome! Hope you're feeling better today. I am going to respond to each of your posts in this thread, because I think they tell a story...
Is this because I am eating too much? No food is getting stuck but this is really painful.
Asking this question, sort of tells me you think you are eating too much. If you think you are, then, most likely you are. Eating too much can cause your band to slip, esophogeal dilation and other serious complications, ultimately causing your band to be ineffective.
Thanks sharebear. I guess I really do need to take 30 minutes to eat my meals as hard as that sounds.
I gather from this that you are eating too fast, which can cause you to swallow air and cause the burping, but not the hot saliva...that would be stomach acid (reflux or GERD), which comes from BELOW your band and indicates vomiting, not burping. Again, a very negative sign and a reason to call the doctor. Do you have a hiatal hernia??
Probably eating too much too fast. I am only at 2ccs so I don't think I am too tight.
Yeah I do eat fast. Definitely not the 30 minutes that I should be taking. It's too hard to make a meal last that long.
You can be too tight on 2 cc if you didn't really need a fill...some people are successful losing weight with just an empty band for several months, especially with a high BMI, such as yours. It appears that you do eat too fast...Kristi asked how much you are eating at a sitting...you didn't answer.
I haven't eaten meat yet just Greek Yogurts and Smart Ones mostly. Is this a cause for concern in regards to my band having serious problems or is it no big deal as long I take my time to eat?
Because when I tried Chicken Salad it got stuck and i've been scared to try meat.
So you are cleared for solid food and dense protein. Following being stuck, you must be on liquids for 24 hours, 48 hours if you had a really bad stuck episode. My doctor doesn't require mushies for an additional day, because with mushies and liquid meals, we tend to gain due to the higher glycemic load of this type of food. In order to avoid being stuck, you need to be compliant with your doctors/nutritionists instructions. Because 99% of the members of this board have stated that their post-op instructions were consistent with what I received, I am going to list them here and assume that yours are similar.
At the point that you are cleared for solids, it is important to add them cautiously and one new food per meal. That means that you can add a new solid at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Snacks can be 15 gr good carb + 8 gr dense protein (total of no more than 100 calories).
Dense protein: Meats; chicken, beef, pork, fish, eggs.
If you make chicken salad, for instance, you must dice the chicken into 1/4 inch pieces (mms, eraser, tic tac size) when you make it. If you add celery (I wouldn't this early out) cut it into the same size pieces. Add low fat mayo, just enough to moisten.
Meal size: One half cup...that is it. Don't attempt to eat more than this. It is too soon...I could barely finish a half cup at 6 weeks out.
If you get a "soft stop" sign, STOP EATING. Soft stops include, runny nose, burp, hiccup, etc. You might have a little feeling of discomfort in your esophogus....stop. If you have "first bite syndrome", stop and wait for it to pass...first bite syndrome is when you eat one, two or three bites and feel uncomfortable, like the food isn't going down. If you continue to eat after feeling discomfort, you will PB your food back up and be on liquids and start the vicious cycle over again...
Feeling "FULL": You will not feel full the way you did pre-op...for banded people, feeling full is actually the absence of PHYSICAL HUNGER. If you eat until you FEEL FULL you will overeat and cause problems. Eat your half cup and set a timer for 4 hours from the start of your meal. If you don't have physical hunger (stomach growling, light headed, etc) and you are feeling like you "want something" that is HEAD HUNGER and is an emotional issue that needs to be dealt with without eating...go for a walk, brush your teeth, call a friend, do something besides eat.
At your stage, I ate 6 times per day...
Breakfast: 1 scrambled egg white + 1 egg with a little grated cheese = half a cup 150 cal 14 gr protein, 10gr fat, 0 carb
Snack (if hungry): 1 low fat cheese stick with some diced peeled apples (mm size) 8 gr protein 80 cal 3 gr carb 1 gr fat
Lunch: 1/3 cup tuna salad with 8 reduced fat wheat thins 200 cal
18 gr protein, 2 gr carb, 5 gr fat
Snack: Protein pudding: SF instant pudding + two scoops protein shake powder (Bariatric Advantage-complementary flavor) + 2 cups nf milk = 4 servings, each has 14 gr protein and 12 carbs 1 gr fat (124 calories) and is a great way to boost protein without blowing your day...and you have 3 more in the fridge for tomorrow, etc.
Dinner: 3 oz dense protein= sauce( to moisten, could be bbq or marinara) + 2 tbs cooked veggies = half a cup. Be sure to cut everything into tiny pieces and chew each bite 20 times putting your fork down between meals. appx 200 cal, 20 gr protein (fat and carbs vary with sauce and veggie choices)
Dessert: Pudding cup works or some fruit and cheese (like the morning snack)124 cal 14 gr protein, 12 gr carb 1 gr fat.
This is how it breaks out:
Calories 878
Protein 88 gr
Carbs and fat will vary, but will be within your guidelines...as you progress to eating 3/4 cup and more variety your calories will increase incrementally to about 1200 per day...for a guy that is low, but if you drink some nf milk in place of some water you will get it up to about 1300-1400 and add protein and carb grams.
Hope this helps!
Let us know how it goes!

Excellent advice Steph! Wish we could have this info stay at the top for newbies! Thanks for doing this! Bandsters shouldn't be afraid to eat meat. Also some people like to compare fill levels and they forget that we all have a different size stomach and as we lose weight we need adjustments because of the change in size of our stomachs or fat around the stomach.
Thanks for doing this!
