What should I expect when I have Lap-Band w/ Plication?

I think Kate is correct... Plication itself -in a medical dictionary is just the folding....
Doing the plication of the entire stomach would not help with slippage...
but the article you referenced more talks about using two different types of plication (folding) to hold the band in place...
This is just a way for the doctor to secure the band..........

Ask him/her to be sure... Sometimes surgeons use medical jargon without realizing the effect it will have on the patient.....   or without realizing we have no clue what they are talking about....

My surgeon is doing the same thing and its to prevent slippage. Not says that you won't have one. But its added protection. I was totally okay with it. Its just a couple of stiches...

I'm a combo buddy - I just had it done as part of a revision (they were supposed to reposition the band but had to completely replace it, fixed a hiatal hernia and a slight slip).  I was banded in 2009 (sep) lost 72 lbs (from 242 to 168) then suddenly something started going on 8 months later - either too loose or two tight.  Had a complete unfill last year and spent all year going back up slowly.  Again the problems started (nighttime reflux).  I went into my docs office on emergency - they did the barium swallow looked borderline slip.  They suspected I had a hiatal hernia which they said can happen when you lose weight as you lose it on ur organs.  The symptoms are you are either in the yellow or red zone never in green and that was me.  Unfilled again - next swallow looked normal but when measuring band location it did look like it was sitting lower.  My choices were do nothing (I had since gained back 13 lbs and wasn't losing); and the Dr told me she can never really tighten me too much as it seems to create the issues; or do a revision.  I asked what is the failure rate of revision.  answer 30 pct.  when i asked the definition of failure it was that it did not fix the problem (odds were very small that i would be worse off.   She said she will also pleat the stomach that will mitigate that 30 pct risk.  I am the type of person *****searches everything b4 deciding but I took a leap of faith in my surgeon and now that I am reading up on this (so not like me to make such a decision) i find it brilliant.  She described it and maybe it was her confidence as "its brilliant really"... and btw she only did 5 so it is THAT new or not done yet and my place is a very busy practice at a teaching hospital.  I said so basically I am a guinea pig and she said yes.  Well I said fine do it - I didn't really have the time for research the surgery had to get done- I did what I don't do trust the expert.  I am glad I did but check back with me.  When i was getting unfills i was putting on 3 lbs a week.  They told me w/ this new thing - they don't have to tighten the band as much.  I had developed a hiatal hernia and had a slight slip (it was 'subtle').  so this seems to help that too - I have to read the study but its all very fascinating to me now after the fact!

I am a soon to be combo buddy! I'm feeling a little nervous because not that many people know about this and they turn their nose up at it because they are uneducated about it. I'd love to hear how your surgery went and how you are doing today!

If your are just now realizing this is what your think he is talking about, I think you need to have a discussion with him and clear things up in your mind. There is one person on this forum that I am aware of that has the combination, but if your just now coming to this conclusion, I would think that you have things confused? The band is sutured to the stomach, and that is probably what he is referring to? Regardless though.............you need to throughly UNDERSTAND what surgery your having and what all is involved.

Also don't rely on your surgeon for complete info about WLS. Also visit ALL the WLS forums. VSG, DS, RNY and Revision. Find out which WLS'ers are  happiest and SUCCESSFUL with their own WLS types!!!

All plication means is to fold. ie A napkin is plicated.
It is used in many ways, the stomach top is pulled up
and folded over the top of the band to prevent slippage,
or the stomach is folded into itself and stapled and stiched.
And there are others.

Actually Banded-Plication is is a new procedure there doing. They do the stomach Plication (fold the stomach inward then stitch it, basically making the stomach look like a tube). Then they apply the Lap Band.  This procedure is supposed to decrese the risk of slippage and errosion.

so, would you say plication is making a "faux" sleeve?  then adding a band on top?

& that sounds good because?

This video was made by the surgeon I am going to see here in Jacksonville Fl. It explains the benefits of adding the band on top of the plication. I had never heard of the procedure until my wife and I attened our seminar. I happened to do a search on the internet to find more information on it and stumbled apon the video made by the same surgeon who did the seminar.
