BMI too high for Band?

My BMI is 54.  Is this too high for most surgeons to agree to do the lap-band?  I do NOT want the Roux NY surgery.  I definately want the lap-band.  Anyone else in Pittsburgh who started with a BMI as high as mine who got the surgery?

I'm not in pittsburgh but my bmi currently is at 71.2 my surgeon is ok with it but does want me to lose 20-25 lbs to get my bmi into the 60's only bc it will make it safer for me during surgery. I'm currently in my 6 mo supervised weight loss phase for my insurance. Good luck!

Mine was 54 too and now I'm at 33.  So not only did a surgeon do my surgery but I have lost 140 lbs.

I'm not in PA and I am sure it varies by surgeon but my BMI was 56.3 at my initial consultation and I, specifically, asked my doctor if he considered that too high for LapBand.  His response was that he had performed LapBand surgery with successful results on patients as high as 70, but he encouraged 10% weight loss and required 3 weeks pre-op liquid diet to shrink the liver prior to surgery.  He also had stats showing that a good percentage of his LapBand patients were in the 50-55 range.

Good luck~!

I was over 54.  My surgeon suggested gastric bypass and I politely rejected it.   I told him I was dedicated and would do whatever it took to get the weight off.  Still working on it but with what I think is tremendous success.  I have not regretted it one day!

Good luck and state your case to your surgeon, it does work for higher BMI's if you have the determination!!!!!

Hi, I'm not in Pittsburgh but my BMI at the time of surgery was 63.3, my surgeon didn't have a problem giving me the band, however they did try to persuade me into getting the RNY constantly. Good Luck with your surgery :)

Mine was 56 or 58. Something like that and they had no issues giving me the band.

Mine was around 60.. whatever 385 lbs and 5' 5" will getcha...

Dr. suggested RNY one time, told him no thank you and that was that.  I got banded on 3/09/09 and haven't looked back since.

Currently under 200!!! at 188.2 today (been bouncing around 188 & 191 for a few days).. lost over 190 lbs in 2 years.   It can be done.
