Dr Oz -- Misrepresentation?

So the show today had a long segment on Lap Band surgery (specifically related to the new FDA decision to make banding available to patients with BMI below 35).

I think he did a pretty good job representing 2 doctors -- one in favor of the lowered standard and one who is clearly opposed to it.

He showed 2 Band patients (one is 6 months post op and one is 5 years post op) -- and they showed their 'before/after' foods.

The patient who is 6 months post op showed that lunch/dinner/snack items that she used to eat.
The food she displayed for her 'current' eating was
6 spoonfuls of yogurt
1 cup of clear broth
4 spoonfuls of pudding

That was it ---- and to me that is just absurd.  I can't believe that she was not questioned about how she sustains her body on 10 spoonfuls of food a day -- where is her protein, product, whole grains, etc.
I think it was a gross misrepresentation of the way that Band patients are instructed to eat (afte about 2 weeks post op) --- and very mis-leading to prospective patients.

Although he appears to have a favorable opinion of banding (in a population who is obese and likely to develop co-morbidities) --- but he needs to read up.  Jean -- send him a book, please!!!!!

That's really bad! Is Dr Oz really a doc? (I have only heard of him from on OH.) That sort of reporting is dangerous! Not only could you not be healhy on that sort of food, it simply would not do its job of keeping taking away hunger! Gives a totally misleading impression.

Im glad Robin (5 yrs out) pointed out that Jackie was eating a soft food diet. At 6 months out Jackie should NOT be eating a soft food diet unless she was having complications.  Jackie should be eating protein. Yogurt, clear broth, and pudding is something you only eating in recovery or if you are getting stuck, PBing, or having severe reflux issues.  I think having Jackie on the show did a huge disservice to those researching. Jackie's diet is very atypical of a SUCCESSFUL bandster. In fact Lapbanders are warned to AVOID soft slider foods.  She blew it as a guest.

Robin looked amazing and I'm so glad she was upfront and honest about the struggle and that having the band was WORK and not a cure all.  She is one bandster who earned every pound lost. She is definately a band rock star!

Too bad I missed that, though I heard at least one of the LapBanders is from OH. I think a lot of people don't quite know all the details.. and I am very curious how she sustains herself on that much food. Maybe she is on a liquid diet still... but 6 months out??? Maybe 6 weeks out?

She claimed to be 6 months out (and down 50 pounds) and said that she 'eats' 6 teaspoons of yogurt for lunch, 1 cup of broth for a snack and 4 teaspoons of pudding for dinner

It was truly absurd --- if that is all she can eat at 6 months post op, she needs an unfill.

The sad part was that the doctor asked 2 prospective patients if they would still consider Lap Band, seeing what that woman eats and they said 'sure' ------

Hmm...I saw that too, I am going on 6 years post op and I can HONESTLY say in various stages of my adjustments I've eaten soft foods especially in MY FIRST YEAR when restriction tends to be the TIGHTEST. But it was a lot more nutritious than yogurt, pudding and broth. I ate pudding and broth as part of my 6 weeks post op healing and that was about it. The soft foods I ate in my first year were MAINLY SOFT proteins like tuna, baked fish, egg salad, re-fried beans/cheese, yogurt, pudding, protein drinks, this way I did not stretch my pouch and I avoided vomiting the first 18 month of surgery to ensure my band healed properly and I stayed away from hard to eat foods especially the first year.

I honestly think what they were trying to convey was it is OK to reduce portions in the losing phase especially in the first 12-18 months when MOST wls patients are more motivated and eager to get their weight off, I don't think it is out of line to eat spoons full of food per meal in the first year, and MOST Lap banders restriction varies anyway so I seriously DOUBT she is eating that little every single day. Also they gave an example OF HOW MUCH A 6 year bandster is SUPPOSE to eat and I believe they WERE GIVEN AN ACCURATE EXAMPLE OF HOW MUCH A SUCCESSFUL bandster SHOULD EAT the first year and at 6 years post op, at 2 years MOST bandsters should eat a balanced SOLID MEAL to decrease chances of vitamin deficiencies also a newly banded person's pouch is going to be a LOT smaller than a 6 year banded person so there WILL BE A DIFFERENCE OF how much a 6 month banded person east versus someone who is 6 years post op.

Regarding Jean's book, people should be VERY HONEST about how little they eat especially if they are getting to goal weight, and Jean is the last person I would believe on how much they eat... after all she slipped her own band so she is the last person in my opinion to be critical of how LITTLE someone is eating on TV.
