Lap Band vs. Reux en Y

 Hi
I have to decide on a bariatric type.  I know its a personal decision, but my surgeon says I may not get good long term results with the band.
Does anyone who had the lap band wish they got the Bypass....or visa versa?

I've been banded for 3-1/2 years and have never regretted my surgery choice. I'm not saying it's the perfect surgery, but right now it's right for me. In 10 years time, some genius may have invented a 100% safe permanent cure for obesity, and when that happens, I'll jump on that bandwagon.

When a surgeon strongly recommends one surgery over another, I have to ask myself:
1. is he/she pushing the surgery he/she likes to perform, or gets paid more for?
2. is he/she suggesting the surgery that's best for me?

What kind of eater are you? Are you a snacker/grazer? Do you love sweets? Do you have obesity-related medical conditions that need to be resolved quickly? If so, you might do better with RNY. The band won't stop you from eating small amounts all day long, or sweets or chips or whatever. And no surgery will force you to make good food choices and exercise. No surgery will banish your eating demons forever or cure an eating disorder like compulsive overerating or binge eating. No WLS will eliminate emotional/stress/boredom eating - only you can do that. I know some very successful RNY patients who struggle with the very same eating issues as I do, and they've made the same lifestyle changes as I have.

I eat a lot of sweets, but no diabetes yet.  My doctor says Ive had very high sugars the past couple of physicals, but its not at a point that I have diabetes.
I tend to be a both a bulk eater and a  grazer, I eat all day...and a lot each time a eat.

My doctor told me that he thought the RNY was the best pick for me, but being the sweet guy that he is...he let that be my choice. He asked if I lost only 50 pounds with the lap band would I be happy...I said yes although I would want to lose more than that...it was better than keeping the extra 50 on. He just told me to sit and research until I was postive what I wanted to do. Lap Band was and still is my choice. I wouldn't trade my Band for anything else in this world. I've lost 144 pounds and thats all in a year and its had its up and downs just like anything else. Like I've had several tell me...its a "tool" ...its not gonna do it for you. You have to make smart choices and learn how to use it. Its made my choices alot easier simply becaues it helps me feel fuller faster and theres just alot of things that I can't eat anymore no matter how many times I've tried..which is a good thing on certain things..such as pizza lol. I know..shouldn't be eating pizza..but its not gonna kill anyone to try a half slice of pizza because well...simply because you aren't gonna be able to eat it and you'll regret it after trying lol. I LOVE MY BAND! Just keep researching til you decide what you think is best for you...and when you're not sure about that...pray and God will help you decide. Like me...I kept praying for someone to tell me which one I should get. No one could tell me...so I just kept praying for God to show me the right steps to take...started off with the Lap band...then the RNY and after praying if that was what was meant for me to have...I kept having horrible dreams with that so I took that as a sign that Lap band is the choice I need to make. i've been on the right path every since. Wish you the best of luck and hope that you decide what you want soon...no matter what surgery you want or get....its not gonna do it for you...its just a "tool" to help you to lose weight. Best wishes

Thank you,  I have been praying but im having difficulty hearing.  it was clear not to have the sleeve because i felt no peace.  Very impressed with 144lb weight lost.  Did you do a diet with the band?  or follow some guidelines?

Yeah I did diet but thats the only way that a Lap band is gonna work. It just helps you get fuller faster and stay full longer. Keep praying and just try to listen to what your heart tells you. you'll figure it out...Hope you decide soon and that it works out great for you

I am not a band patient, but I can tell you that it's not right for a surgeon to be pressuring you one way or the other.

My best advice would be to look at all the major surgery types. These are: adjustable bands, gastric bypass, duodenal switch (DS), and vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) and see what you think will work best for you. Then seek the appropriate surgeon.

If you want a band, then hire a band surgeon. If you want a vsg, hire a vsg surgeon. And same with other surgery types.

you should not allow a surgeon to try to rush you through the preop procees or push you towards having a certain surgery. You are the one that will have to live with this the rest of your life, and only you will know what surgery will work best for you. You don't have to decide which one over night. Take some time to research and think about it.

All the best
