I have surgery Monday... what were ya'lls food choices and recommendations in the few days prior to surgery?

I am not eating bad... just wondering if there is something I should stay away from. Doc just says dont eat or drink after midnight before surgery but doesnt say to stay away from anything in particular.

I was on a two week liquid diet prior to surgery so I was only drinking protein shakes, broth, tea and having sugar free jello.

I would recommend staying away from high fatty foods at least 48 hrs prior to surgery.

Good Luck with your surgery on Monday.

You musta been starving! I know after the band you have to do that but before.. while your still HUNGRY.... I commend you my dear.

I wonder why your doc had you do that? Dr Spivak has like over 10 years experience and isnt requesting me to do liquids only.... ?

I have to do a 14 day liquid diet (Liver Diet). This is recommended for ppl that are 275 pounds & over. To shrink your liver. Only thing I can have that is food is lean meat. Thats only if Im feeling lightheaded. Only can have 500 to 800 calories aday. Then 2 day boewl prep. I have to start clear liqiuds only and nothing to eat or drink 12 hour prior to surgery.  Soo Im trying to wrap my head around that. CONGRATS on your surgery Monday.  Its good you don't have to do all of that. But you might want to check about the bowel prep.
The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time...

I would focus on protein, fruits and veggies and stay away from fats and carb.  This will help keep you from getting constipated.  Straining when pooping hurts where the port is stitched onto the muscle...  Also, no alcohol at all.  With all the IV fluids they push with surgery, you will weigh more post-op so don't even think about getting on the scale till you go in for your first post-op appt.

Make sure to get all the supplies you need for when you get home!  Good luck!

Steph

I got the Gas X chewables, used a heating pad and walked alot. I had my surgery on Monday and was back to work at my desk job on Wednesday. No issues at all for me.

As for as how I did the two week diet prior, it wasn't easy! My doctor did it to shrink the liver. My highest weight was 335 at the seminar I went to. By the time I went for my last consultation I was at 317 and I lost 22lbs in my preop liquid diet. I had two shakes a day and all the unlimited amount of things you would eat on your first week after surgery. It prepared me well for what was to come after.

Good luck with surgery!

I had no pre-op diet other than stopping at midnight. also.

I went out to a nice dinner with my husband 2 nights before surgery.  I ate well, had a glass of wine and had a great time.

The day before surgery, I ate light --- I did not want to feel bloated and had to wake up early on surgery day.

Funny thing is, at 3 weeks post op, when I was allowed to go back to normal food, we went back to the same restaurant --- I ordered the very same meal --- ate about 4 bites of it and took the rest home to make several more meals.

Sometimes I think that we think we need to have the 'Last Supper' because we will never eat again ---- but there is a way to enjoy just about everything after the band (once you have passed your healing phase).

So -- enjoy your weekend -- but don't overdo it.

I had no pre-op diet except the nothing after midnight thing.  I ate what I liked.  HOWEVER, after the surgery, your life is all about gas for at least 3 days, unless you're one of the lucky ones.  I found walking, walking and more walking worked better than anything.  I also had a nurse that told me when I left that if I didn't have much pain, use ibuprophin.  The pain meds make it harder for your gut to wake up, which means more gas longer.  I don't know if it works for everyone, but it sure did for me.  Some people have bad gas for 2 weeks, for me, 3 days.  Good Luck and let us know how you're doing!

First of all, I love your southern accent. I was on clear liquids 14 days prior to surgery. I would do an Atkins diet or something similar to it from here on in. High protein, low carbs and fat. I wish you the best and a speedy recovery. Keep us posted.
