Umm, wow is all I can say. I mean, if you had wanted to bring up your surgery at the table, you would have had no problem saying "Hey, well, I just had surgery, so could I get soup instead of a salad?" Not go seek out the manager and tell them in private and ask if the switch could be made.

Definitely call and speak to the manager. A little training in how to be tactful is in order I believe.

Update - I did call the Manager the next day, and she was very apologetic. She didn't realize my family didn't know. She also sent me a gift card for when "I'm fully recovered".

My Aunt and Uncle live much closer to the restaurant, so I'll be sending the gift card on to them.
