Hi everyone:
I was speaking with a fairly well known person in the WLS world yesterday and he said that I should be supplementing my diet with protein shakes. (He did have another surgery; but, claims to be expert at band as well.
I have been told by my doctor (and I thought I learned here) that Lap Banders only supplement with protein shakes if they are ill or having band problems. I was told that we should be getting our protein from food.
I was just wondering if anyone else has been told this. He then told me that obviously my doctor did not care about my health. I was a little insulted. I do protein shakes after a fill but that is all.
Just wondering what everyone else is doing.
Have a great day!!!!

I get anywhere from 60-80 grams of protein from food. I would rather eat my protein and get that feeling of satiety from the food. I only would do a protein drink after a fill and haven't had one for 6 months and only after a stuck or PB, and I've only been stuck four times in 20 months after eating too dry of food. I've never PB'd.
I know some can't eat breakfast and they get their protein by a protein drink. Sometimes I eat Greek yogurt and that has 14 grams of protein in it for breakfast.
Hi Pickles,
My doc hates us using protein drinks for meals . He wants us to get the protein from our food .
Now, when he does fills he wants us to use protein drinks for the first 48 hrs due to swelling from the fills but other then that he dont like them.
And to be honest protein drinks do not fill me up anyways I never stay full from them to me they are just liquid calories .

We have no need at all of protein supplements unless we are ill, temporarily too tight to eat etc.. There should be no problems at all in getting 60-70+ gm a day from foods -which is all a normal female requires.

I get my protein requirements from food --- not liquids.
My doc says that if I want a protein shake for breakfast for convenience, to go for it ---- but they do not taste good to me and they don't satisfy my appetite, so I don't do it.
I eat greek yogurt (14 grams) and a piece of cheese (7 grams)
Then, I get 20 - 30 grams at both lunch and dinner

I mainly eat "real food". I don't usually rely on protein drinks for my protein.
However, lately I've been drinking one for breakfast for convenience sake.. not to supplement.
I think if you're getting enough protein from your food, you don't need protein shakes.
I think your friend isn't well educated about how a band is supposed to work. JMO.

My Dr said that if you are eating good dense protein 3-4oz, 3 x a day, you will get in enough of your protein from your food. The bad part of drinking protein shakes is that is usually does not keep you full and you have to be careful of the calories, I drink low carb, weight loss type, only on rare occasions, usually if I am too tight to eat or have just had a fill and are on liquids for a day.
Mari Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels!
If I need to supplement protein, I make sf instant pudding with nf milk and 2 scoops of my meal replacement shake powder. It makes about 4 servings, about a half cup and contains 15 gr protein and 15 gr carb. I will have it mid afternoon as a snack and then eat my normal meals. I also make these for my grandchildren to eat for breakfast, since they leave for school at 6:30 and it is quick and nutritious to get them going in the morning.
My doctor said no liquid meals unless I was post-fill or post-stuck.
