Scared of the first 3 weeks
Adjustable Gastric Band on 07/07/11
Hi. I am in the early process of getting the lap band. I haven't been approved yet. What i am really scared of is the first 3 weeks and the weeks before when you can only have liquids. I'm afraid of getting lightheaded and shaky. In the morning, if I don't have enough protein, my blood sugar goes wacko and I start to sweat and shake and my brain gets very foggy. How will I manage my blood sugar during those early weeks? I'm not on any medication for it.

It's not a lack of food, fat IS stored energy. It's the carb withdrawal and you are right, protein does help even out your blood sugar.
I'd start backing off the carbs now so you can do it slowly.

Many people don't have to do any pre-op liquid diet. And it is very easy to get enough protein from protein shakes, a healthy adult female only needs aobut 60gms a day. Your doc will help you work out what is right for you.

It sounds scary but relax its not as bad as you think. Your pre-op diet usually isn't all liquids . It all depends on your doctor. Mine was 2 frozen lean cuisine meals a day plus 2 protein shakes and I could also have a 1/2 cup of veggies and sugar free jello/ pudding. I did this for 2 weeks.
I am like you and get the shakes if my blood sugar gets too low and I haven't had a problem at all with that through this whole journey. I remember thinking I was going to starve to death. I will say that the fear was worst then the actual diet. Make sure you talk to your nutritionist and come up with a plan in case you have a problem. Its easier to talk about before hand then to end up having a problem during a time when you can't get in touch with them.
Good luck to you, I wish you all the best in this exciting journey.

I had no pre-op diet to speak of, only clear liquids the day before. I was a bit weak, but not bad at all.
And post-op for me was 2 weeks total.. I wasn't on liquids but a few days. Clears maybe 3 days and then on to full.
As someone else suggested, talk to your doctor and/or their staff (nurses, dietician, nutritionist). They'll help you.
