Chapstick and warm beverages were some of the best things post-op for me (other than the pain meds).  My lips were really dry afterwards.   Also, my throat was sore and scratchy after being extubated.  So, when you are able to drink something other than water after surgery, ask for hot tea or broth.  It was sooo soothing!

Good luck with your upcoming surgery!!

Make sure you find a protein drink that you really really like also , you will be drinking alot of them the first three weeks after surgery till you can start back on reg foods again .

Congrats on your upcoming surgery!  Definitely find the protein powder/shakes you like beforehand, and pack chapstick.  I had to borrow my Mom's when she came to visit me after the surgery.  My tummy swelled after, and my Mom (aka Lifesaver) ran to Walmart and bought sweatpants that were 2 sizes too big, and they fit the first week I was home, but I can donate them now!  It's hard to walk outside in a nightie (NJ in February), which was the only thing that fit over my tummy.  I was walking back and forth out to our pool, where only my close neighbors could see, LOL.  I'm sure one of them took a picture!  I would also definitely recommend a pillow to hold against your tummy on the ride home.

I'm a Mom, too - of a special needs child.  I made sure I had help for a few days, but I should have scheduled for a week.  So make plans to have help with the kids, housecleaning, laundry, etc.  I made a few meals ahead of time, so my family wasn't living on fast food while I was unable to cook.  I "hired" my 17 yr old neice to vacuum and dust for me - money is a great motivator!  So if you know any teenagers, use them!

I wish you lots of luck, no gas, and an easy recovery
