For the love of protein shakes :(

I am day 6 days post op, and I am soooo tired of protein shakes! I want something to eat so badly! I am doing really good, but I would love to eat something...anything! I am supposed to start soft food on the March 14, it feels like that's so far away!

How long did your Doctor tell you to wait until you could start soft foods?

I was on liquids for two weeks after surgery and I could start mushy foods three weeks after my surgery like mashed potatoes, refried beans with cheese things like that .  Then I could start soft foods four weeks out .  IE eggs, cream of wheat, oatmeal, .  and by five weeks I was back to solid foods :o)

No matter how hungry you get do not start foods till your doc tells you .  Your tummy is still healing and that band is healing they dont want you to be working them stomach muscles .

Are you allowed to have SF pudding, jello ? I was allowed them things two weeks out and that helped .

Oh I'm not gonna eat anything, don't want to go through this process again...I am just so tired of protein shakes. I have dressed them up several different ways, but it's still getting to me! Mushy's start on the 14th and I already have a menu ready to go! Just can't wait until I can hold a fork in my hand again! I've been fine for the most part, but today it just hit me hard...I'm ready for some actual food :)

Steelersfan had about the same post op as I did.  I remember the feeling of holding a fork in my hand again! thats funny you mentioned that.

Steelers, did your doc OK sf Jello post op?  Thats one thing my surgeon says NO to until 1 yr out - I asked why just recently and apparently there has been some reports of the gelatin actually sticking to your stomach wall above the band.  I can see how that happens because sometimes even after dishwashing a bowl of jello in ho****er, some pieces do not dissolve on the plate - so something similar must happen internally to people.  Interesting tho.

Yeap I was allowed jello post op but my doc does not put nothing in the band during surgery though we are completly empty as to where I have read on here alot of docs go ahead and put some saline in mine is opposite .

I never had problems eating jello post op but Im not a huge jello fan either so I didnt eat to much of it lol.

That is interesting I think you are the first person that I have read that their doc dont allow them to eat jello its amazing how different docs are on this surgery from foods to rules .

My band was empty for 8 weeks.

What does your doc say about rice? that was another no no for a year.  Then when I tried it I only tried brown rice and it has to be mushy.

The only other off limits food are celery and carbonation.

Personally, I cannot eat pasta, bread (unless its a whole grain toasted -but generally stay away from bread) and potatoes (i can't even eat sweet potatoes unless its the baby food variety)., oh and I cannot eat pork - any cut / cooked anyway.  I tiny bite sends me puking.  Also, can't really eat anything reheated.

Everyone is different!

My doc dont like us eating rice , bread or pasta but he dont say no you cant eat it either . It all depends on the person.

I dont have any issues with any food there are certain foods I just haven't tried because of people saying to much trouble with them like celery and corn

Other then that everything is fine with me, but I chose to stay away from pasta right now .  I want to lose quite a bit more weight first then I will add pasta back into my diet later on but to be honest I dont miss it at all.

Rice , I eat that maybe once a month and its only a couple tablespoons and that is it .  Breads and potatoes I have had no issues with bread .

Pork no issues at all, gosh there isn't anything that makes me sick or I have to watch out for I dont know if that is because I keep my band loose or what .  I'm the only person in support group that dont have issues with any kind of food also which they make me feel bad because I dont have issues or fills :o(  so because of that not sure if I will go back to support grou*****t

But , because I dont have issues with foods I really watch how much carbs I eat in a day and all that jazz. Usually, I stay around 30-50 per day and fat nothing over 50 grams per day .

Not having issues with foods is a blessing but man it can be a downfall also if I don****ch it lol.

I know how hard it is , I was dying to for something to chew anything to chew .

Have you tried gum ? That helped me out so much because it gave me the feeling of chewing something .

There is a one out there I cant remember who makes it but its chocolate and mint and it taste like ice cream desserts gum is what its called .  They have Strawberry shortcake which I didn't care for and Key lime pie which I haven't tried  .  It's sugar free to .

Get some gum that will really really help remember dont swallow the gum though lol.  I have a very bad habit of swallowing gum so gum is a no no to me

Well maybe it'll help to know I had to do a 30 day pre-op diet of 3 skim milks a day and all the non calorie clear liquids I could drink in between. And then after surgery it was another 2  weeks of clear liquids, then 2 weeks of full liquids. I didn't think I'd ever be eating solids again! I know it's rough but hang in there, this too shall pass!
