I am not allowed to drink anything with my meals. I wait about 45 minutes. As far as alcohol, I can have it in moderation, but only a drink or two and I am really buzzed now, so I chose not to . I also don't really want to waste calories on it often.

I was told to not drink after surgery.  I forgot what it's called but basically you can become easily addicted to other things like: alcohol or gambling.  It happens to a lot of WLS patients.  And sounds like maybe your friend could be heading there.

You are correct!  They are called "transfer addictions,"...basically transferring your addiction from food to (X).

As far as the alochol I was told no booze the first yr.  Im not much of a drinker anyways so I didnt ask to many questions in that dept :o)

I don't drink that often because I am usually the designated driver. But when I'm on vacation and the rental car is safety tucked away in the parking garage, I've been known to throw a few back. But those times are very rare - once a YEAR, maybe. Other than that, it's one drink at home maybe every two weeks.

I do not drink with my meals at all or for 30 or so mins after.
As for alcohol . I drink socially and have had no issues. You may get dehydrated a little easier and be tight the next day and you have to count the alcohol calories and make sure not to mindlessly eat while drinking. I have never had any issues.I can drink as  much now as I did pre surgery .Watch your mixers tho. I usually go with water .Juice is too much calories and too sweet and everything else is carbonated.LOL Flavored vodkas with water are pretty good and around 65 cals per shot.

My surgeon has us not drinking during meals.  Occasionally I will take just a really tiny sip if I'm needing moisture, but that has only happened about three times.  Otherwise, I keep a glass off the table & set a timer if I need a reminder to start drinking again.

Regarding alcohol, he said absolutely none in the first year.  I didn't want to bother with it just cuz I didn't want to waste the calories.  I'm a year & three months out now and still going on my WL.  I did have some alcoholic drinks when we were in Cancun in January, but not very much.  For one thing it does affect me easier than it did preop; 2nd, I still don't want to wast the calories; and 3rd - since it does affect me differently I do not want to risk the chance of the "day after" (or the "night of" from my youth ) vomitting that ensues when my body's gone over it's limit.

The concern of what you posted is that your friend has been observed drinking heavily... That is more than social drinking and does sound like the potential for transfer addiction is there.  Alcohol can deplete calcium and vitamin D easier as well.  You may suggest to your friend to see about getting her levels checked.  If she's going to continue drinking, she may find out she'll need to increase her Vit D and calcium intake.

Whatever you decide to do yourself, just continue to be honest with your doctor about it in your followups.  Mine didn't smack me around today when I mentioned having had drinks in Cancun.

I don't drink with my meals.  My doctor said not to drink for 45-60 minutes after eating.  The few times when I have broken down and taken a few sips, it wasn't pretty.  For me, if I drink while eating it seems to fill up the pouch and everything rises up and makes me feel like I'm going to vomit and it's uncomfortable.  So as much as I always feel thirsty, I don't drink when I eat.

As for alcohol I know some docs allow it and others don't.  I don't drink for the following reasons 1. wasted calories, 2. tendancy towards mindless eating, 3. lowers my resistance to temptation, 4. concerns about cross addictions.
