Does having a hiatal hernia & acid reflux cause a major problem for surgery?
I met with my surgeon for the first time 2 weeks ago. Since then I have been busy getting all the pre-op tests done. After having the Upper GI, they found that I have a Hiatal Hernia and a very mild case of Acid Reflux. Does anyone out there have this problem as well and how will this all work after surgery?

Hi, I had a very large hiatal hernia and a terrible time with reflux BEFORE the band. It was repaired and never have had reflux since. It's been wonderful! I sure don't miss the reflux.
I've had a hiatus hernia since I was 12 (now 52) and I was banded 10 days ago, most successfully. Here in Canada a surgeon will fix your hiatus hernia during lapband insertion if it's bad enough. If not, and in my case, the surgeon said the way the band is inserted and pulled up (or something like that) is in itself somewhat of a fix. It is certainly not a deterrent to surgery. Good luck. I had both a hernia and reflux for 19 years. My doctor fixed the hernia while he was in there and I have had no reflux since being banded (except the two days my band was to tight)
