I just started my insurance required 6 mnth. nutritional counseling and am a little dissapointed by what the nutritionist said. I thought I was around 280 but when she weighed me I was up to 305.. my heaviest! She said for my weight a goal realistic goal weight was around 215 compared to the 160 I would like. I am only 5'2 so I feel like 215 is still very large for my frame.I really do want the Lap Band tho. Are there people here who have lost more then the 80-90 lbs. that seems to be the average. Also if I loose this extra weight pre-op(gained during the time I moved in with my bf) am I more likely to get closer to my goal. I will ask these questions to the doctor but I would also like to hear from real people.

Thanks

I've lost 112lbs in 9 months with 12 more to go. I started at 245lbs, I'm about 5'3. It's plenty possible.

It's absolutely possible.  Your Nut is probably giving you a "realistic" goal based on the *average* weight loss with the band.  It really depends on you, and whether you are willing to make the changes necessary to lose weight.  The band is just an aide.  It helps by slowing down how fast you eat, so that your brain can get the message that you've eaten before you eat too much.  It also helps reduce hunger between meals.  But, you still have to make good food choices, limit grazing, and exercise.  If you are willing to make those commitments, you can do very well with the band.

I lost 120+ lbs. in a little over a year, from 273 to 148 at my lowest.  Now, four years later, I'm up a bit (163 lbs.), and *still* have to work to lose or maintain, but it is easier to do with the band.

It is absolutely possible to lose the weight. I'm going on month 8 since surgery and to date have lose 86 pounds. Like an earlier post said, it depends on you.

An average weight reduction of 2-3 pounds a week during the first 12 months after the operation is possible, but an average of one pound a week is more likely. During the period 12-18 months after Lap-Band, weekly weight loss is less. In general, since June 2001, preliminary indications from America suggest that patients can lose about 40-50 percent of their initial excess body weight by having Lap-Band surgery. By comparison, patients who undergo gastric bypass, such as Biliopancreatic Diversion, Duodenal Switch or Roux-en-Y, typically lose 50-80 percent of their initial excess weight.

My surgeon told me that realistically to only count on loosing 50-80 lbs... but ultimately it was up to me & how well I worked the band. I lost a total of 167lbs. A whole dang person!!!

This isn't a flame towards you...I get so f'n tired of hearing this **** No one determines how much you are going to lose EXCEPT you. Period. If you want to lose 125 lbs..then you will do it. With help from the band, following the band rules, working out and making good food choices. I lost 117 lbs with my band and hard work. Good luck..you can do it!!! -Nikki

I've had my band for 8 months now, since June 2010.  I'm 5 feet 3 inches tall.  I started at 296 lbs.  I have lost 106 lbs so far, and am now at 190 lbs.  I hope to lose an additional 40 lbs.  It's totally possible!

Thank You for the answers everyone... This has given me some hope because although there are statistics it seems like the situation depends on the person. I finally get my one on one with the doctor on Friday!

I lost 130lbs...so far.  I'm still losing.  I lost a total of 13 lbs last month and I'm almost 2 years out and still losing at a good rate.  I was 354 lbs at my heaviest.  I still have about 60 lbs to lose.  I am 5'8" and that is the weight I have to be to have a normal BMI.
