Ideas for weighing food while out?
VSG on 02/09/12
There are tricks that you can use to measure food without measuring cups. For example, the palm of your hand is 3 ounces of meat. Your thumb is about 1 oz of cheeze. A deck of cards is also 3 ounces. Those are the only ones that come to mind off the top of my head.
If you aren't comfortable using those types of measurements (they are more guessing), my girlfriend just bought one of those silicone measuring cups that expand and contract and leaves it in her purse in a sandwhich bag so she can measure with a measuring cup.
There are all kinds of measuring tricks.

Generally, when I eat out, I segregate 1/4 of the food on my plate --- and I move that over to my bread plate and eat it.
I figure that most restaurants are 2 time as much as a normal human should eat, and I need to eat about 1/2 of what a normal human eats.
that much food will at least satisfy me for a while --- and after I get home, I can choose to eat a little more or not.
Some people bring their measuring tools to a restaurant, but personally I would never do that.

I wouldn't get obsessive about it! Not unless you eat out every day!
Get used to looking at your food at home so you get a good idea of quantity. And if you don't guess quite right when out - so what? Eat slowly so you don't over-fill yourself but otherwise, just guess!
A substantial minority of us never weigh or measure, even at home. I would never have succeeded with my weight loss if i had done! I would have got bored, frustrated and probably given up! And many people are told by their docs that it is the volume not the weight that matters anyway!

You can also tell the server, "Please tell the kitchen to put only 3 ounces of chicken on my plate" or "just 1/2 cup of beans" or whatever.

I would never take measuring cups out in a rest either but that is just me. Im three months out and I have really laid back on my measuring but I know how much I can eat and when enough is enough.
Like Kate said I dont get obessive about it. If I eat a little more then a cup gosh nothing is going to happen, my stomach is going to stretch out, or anythign drastric .
