Hello All,

I ha vent posted in awhile, but I'm rethinking my decision to have the band done. I know you guys have more knowledge or just as much as the doctors  who perform  the surgeries (smile). Anyways does anyone think of know if there a max weight involved to have the lap band/realize procedure. I know some doctors don't recommend it, if you are heavy. But what do you guys think? Just looking for thoughts about this.

I was 376 with a BMI of 54, and I was a LOT smaller than many, many people my doc has banded.

Statistically speaking the higher your start weight the less successful you will be long term with banding.

I was 383 when I was banded and have lost 180 lbs.  I'm hovering right around 200 now.. this morning I weighed 201.2.

Statistics will say that lapbanding is less effective and that the average weight loss is only 50lbs with the band....., but I always tell people that I am not a statistic, neither am I average... I am an individual and way beyond average.

actually most stats show that if you still have your band after 5 years that the average weight loss is 30-50%.

So if you have 100 lbs to lose that would be 30-50lbs you would keep off.

If you have 200 lbs to lose then it would be 60-100 but you'd still be obese

Research the FDA and medical journals to get the best advise on max weight and BMI.  You will also find all the information on risks and long term health problems. associated with the lap-band.  Good luck and GOD bless you with making a good decision.

the average with the band is 30-50% of excess weight will be lost - this is an average - some do way better some do waaaay worse.

I started at 299.5 and got down to 197 before my problems started. That's 100 lbs out of the 140 I wanted to lose or 71% of excess weight - once you cross the 50% mark you are considered a success. So take how much you have to lose - cut it in half and ask yourself if you can be happy with that, if worst comes to worst.

Good luck!
