Hi Donna,
Just be honest! These psych evals are just to make sure you're not crazy. The written portion I took would ask some of the silliest questions. My surgeon's office told me they are looking for certain "patterns" in the way you answer them.  I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. If they ask you about how you feel about yourself (and other personal questions) just be honest. These are all emotions that every overweight or morbidly obese person experiences. They just want to make sure that you will be emotionally capable of going through this lifestyle change. Trust me, I've known some pretty "out there" people and they were passed for weight loss surgery so I don't think you have anything to worry about! You are just having normal anxiety. Good luck, friend!

So you have done the research on band surgery. You have made the decison to go for it.
Then there is all this red tape you have to go through and by the end of it all you just want to try again to do it yourself.

1. Call make apt. for weight loss seminar.          2hours long
2. Make an apt. to see a dr.                               1 hour
3. Make apt. to see team of docs                        1 hour
4. Make apt. to see nutritionist                             1 hour
5. Make apt to see psych                                     2 hours
6. Show you've tried to lose weight                    3 months
7. Attend group meeting                                    2 hours
8. call insurance person
9. wait for approval                                             1 month
10. another doc apt.                                             1 hour

This is all Bull Sh** !   If i want plastic surgery i don't have to go through all this . If i want
foot surgery i don't have to go through all this.  It's almost as if your a child .  This p rocess makes one feel little.  It is very degrading.     I am a grown up , i 've done my research.

 Hi there,

I read one of your posts and started to reply (about whether the band helps with overeating).  But, then I checked your earlier posts to see where you are in the lap band process, and came across this one.

The reason that the doctors and insurance carriers make you jump through hoops to get weight loss surgery, is because they want to make sure you are informed about what you are going to go through, and that you are prepared to make the changes necessary to be successful.  It *is* a lot of work and time, but anything that is worthwhile takes effort.

The lap band is *not* an easy fix for obesity.  It is just an aide.  It helps you slow down your eating, so your brain gets the signal that you've eaten, and then you have the willpower to put down the fork.  You asked in another post about the ability to eat pasta.  Because the band limits the opening to the stomach (think about an hour glass, and how the sand slowly goes through the opening), some foods just kind of hang up in that narrow spot.  For me, gummy foods are the worst, things like well-done pot roast, soft tortillas, and some pastas.  Even if those foods are chewed well, they still sort of clump up, and can clog the opening.

Please continue learning about the band, as well as other weight loss surgeries, and find the one that you can be successful with.

It is not bad at all!  I too overthink everything and was really worried.  However, I was happy to find out it was not bad at all.  They just asked me about my marriage, work, what I knew about the lap band procedure, and about eating disorders.  Just be honest with them.  Just make sure that you can say that you understand what the surgery is and what you will expect afterwards.  I left with the opinion that they were wanting to make sure I had researched it and understood that it would take a lot of hard work afterwards.  Honesty is the best policy!

I am very confused . If the band takes alot of hard work and it doesn't prevent one
from overeating than why would you want to get it ??

I overeat and I've always ate too much.  If i get the band how is the band going to prevent me from overeating ?   In other words i eat until i am full.    If i eat until i am full with the band it could be dangerous.

Do the individuals who get the band not have a problem with overeating ?  I am sure that they do have a problem with overeating or they wouldn't have weight issues .   I find it hard to believe that  after a life time of overeating they just stop and say i'm getting the band . Because, if the band doesn't prevent overeating then what good is the band ?

My band is a tool that assists me in the BEHAVIORAL changes I was ready and willing to make regarding my overeating.

I wanted to stop overeating.  I knew that with significant physical hunger that it would be very difficult for me to make that change-- and stay with the change for the amount of time it took to lose all of my excess weight and really learn new skills.

The band allows me to take a small amount of healthy food -- and take small, careful bites -- to satisfy my physical hunger.

I do not eat to feel 'full' anymore.  If I do, I have overeaten.
If I consistently overeat with my band, I risk slippage, erosion and other physical health problems.  So I don't do it.

Because of the way that the band allows a small amount of lean/solid protein and produce to 'sit' in my pouch for a while, my brain is signaled that it has eaten -- and my hunger is satisfied.

If I eat slider foods (low quality, high carbohydrate/high sugar junk food), my band does not hold the food in my pouch, my brain does not get the signal that I have had enough and I eat too much.

The band requires more 'user-participation' than VSG, RNY and DS.
If you want to continue to overeat (by volume), but want WLS, I believe that your best option is DS -- they seem to eat tons of food --- high fat/high protein seems to be the mainstays of their diets.

My psych eval was just a casual conversation/interview with the psychologist.

She wanted to be sure that I did not have unrealistic expectations (like I knew how much work this was going to be -- not a magic bullet and not going to make my life perfect).

They want to make sure that you are intellecually and emotionally ready to be compliant and follow the protocol.  Just be honest.

Your writing ability gives me the indication that you are capable of having an intelligent conversation --- you should do just fine.
Don't lose sleep over this!

If it's going to take that long I would bet they are going to have you do some written questions like I did. For mine I did  booklets of questions then went back a week later to discuss the results with the doc. Like the others have said just be yourself and be honest and you'll do fine!

 I second what kath said..
First i filled out some questionaires.  He reviewed the,.
Then we talked... It is about unrealistic expectations...and what you expect...
Self esteem issues are normal. Anxiety is ok...
JUst try to be honest and dont worry....  :)
