Why?
One of the issues they try to determine what kind of eater you are especially binge eater, sweets, volume eater, addiction eating, stress eating. Those issues don't go away after being banded and can undermine weight loss and may affect whether the lap band is the right kind of weight loss surgery for you. They also want to know if your depressed, and if so, is it being treated, and usually ask for your psychiatrist to approve you as a good candidate for WL surgery. Insurance companies also require a psych eval.
Don't really know what good the psych exam is in most cases. There seem to be a few on OH that have had it and are either unwilling or unable to follow the post-op diet!
Also, I have heard from a few ppl that were determined to have "food issues" after the psych and required to be on 1 yr. supervised diet as opposed to 6 mos. Also there was one lady that was trying to get the band and after hers the Psych told her she needed to undergo 2-3 yrs. of counceling before she would approve her.

Haha... My Psych eval was a joke!! The lady spent the hour talking about her problems more so than mine. She went so far as to tell me she was banded because her husband had cheated on her and she wanted to make him regret it I want to know WHO did hers!!!!!
She did ask me about 5 basic questions that only a fool that didn't want to get banded could possibly answer wrong.
Trust me, don't sweat it!
