Starving after surgery

So I was hoping that I'd have at least a few days before I got really hungry, but I'm starving already and only 2 days post-op!  I am on full liquids so I can have yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes, cream of wheat, etc.  So far today I had a few bites of Cream of Wheat, half a yogurt and been sipping on a protein shake.  I am afraid of eating too much so soon!

What was your diet like so soon after post-op?

I was allowed pureed after 24 hours. I found that refried beans filled me up and kept me full. I added some cheese and smart balance sour cream. I also baked some ricotta cheese with spaghetti sauce and cheese and it was great and went down well.

What is your recipe for the baked ricotta with sauce....sounds delicious. I am only on full liquids until next week..hopefully. But looking so forward to having something I enjoy eating. And that sounds really good right now:)

I think within a few days I was eating 1/4 cup of small curd cottage cheese or 1/4 cup of no sugar added apple sauce and at least one fudgesicle every hour or so. It felt like I was eating constantly and had a hard time getting in the crystal lite. LOL!! I really don't miss those days.

These mushy liquid things are sliding right through the band so they won't cause any trouble to the tummy or the new band.  Just be sure to steer very clear from anything solid. That is ESSENTIAL right now in order for everything to heal in there. This early healing is the foundation of your future band success. Just keep that in mind.

You're doing fine.

I didn't get my appetite bac****il around day 6. I had a lot of swelling and was still taking pain meds so guessing that was the reason? I would think it's a good thing you are able to eat so much so soon, you must be healing quckly?

At your phase, I ate

1/2 a yogurt at about 8am

4oz of protein shake between 10am - 11am (it took an hour to drink 4 ounces)

about 1/2 cup of cream of chicken soup for lunch ---- about 1pm

water starting at 2pm

1/2 yogurt about 4pm

soup again for dinner at about 7pm

pudding or 4 oz of protein shake at about 9pm

water all day

I didn't worry too much about getting enough protein those first several days ---- I ate a few ounces at a time -- adding protein powder to my soup and to my pudding when I made those.
I didn't worry about calories, but probably only got about 500 per day (300 in the protein shake, 100 in yogurt and 100 in soup/pudding).

I am 2 weeks, 3 days out (7/20 surgery) and for 2 weeks I was only allowed protein shakes 3 times per day and some yogurt.  That's it!  I just started soft foods (skipped the pureed) this week.  My first fill is going to be Mon., 8/23.

Hi Jaimie,

One of the things you can do to help yourself is to remove the word "starving" from your vocabulary.  At least when it comes to yourself.  I know you're using it to emphasize how hungry you feel, but words have lots of power and if you keep expressing your hunger as starvation, it will seem worse to you than it really is.

:::: getting off my soapbox::::

I really liked canned soup whirled in the blender at your stage.  My favorite was bean with bacon using only 1/2 can of liquid (chicken broth instead of water to ^^ the protein just a tad).  Nothing magic about bean/bacon.. I just like it.  Probably avoid tomato right now, it's a bit acidic for a newly banded tummy.. but any cream soups would be good, mushroom, crm of chick, celery, etc.

I love cottage cheese.  If you can't have fruit with it yet, consider getting some fruit flavored s/f syrup (torani & davinci both make them) or some s/f maple syrup to add to it.  Weirdly, I also like CC with Cavendar's Greek seasoning added to it.

Don't worry about calories at this point in time.. it's all about healing right now.

Best of luck to you.
