Maybe you could give honesty a shot and people wouldn't point and giggle anymore.

After researching various surgeries for 6 years, I can honestly say that it was a choice as Aetna was willing to pay for almost any type of surgery I was asking for (assuming it wasn't one of the experimental ones).

I chose the band because I wanted something that I could continue to use long term - my mom had RNY in 2003 and had a lot of trouble with her pouch stretching and gaining some of her weight back. i wanted to be able to feel more like this was something that was being used by me, but not controlling me. I didn't like the idea of malabsorption as I saw what that did to my mom. For me, the band was an overall safer surgery - it has the option to be done out patient and you're back to work in about 2 days max. I felt more comfortable with the length of time research has been done on the band - it has been used in other countries far longer than any other wls. I felt that if it were absolutely needed, the band is reversible - which is something I felt comfortable with. I also didn't want to alter my body drastically by doing the RNY.

I was a volume eater, so I just needed something to help me tame the appetite.

Any other reasons you need? :)

I am sure there are benefits to the other surgeries, but honestly - I wasn't scared at all of the band. I know how important it is to care for my band and not mistreat it or abuse it. That is of the utmost importance with a band as you can easily cause yourself more trouble than you can imagine by not caring for yourself and the band.

If you have other questions, let me know.

RNY with
I haven't read the other replies so i am sorry if this is repetitive, but this is why I initially chose the band:

1. I was great at dieting, but constantly lead by my hunger. I just wanted to stop over eating because I was hungry all the time.

2. I enjoy food. WAAAAAY too much. Once I get eating if it was too good, I had a hard time stopping. I just wanted portion control.

Things I didn't really grasp going into it:

1. I still have to die****ch what goes in my mouth even though the portions are waaay smaller.

2. Breads, pastas, rice, tortillas, and more are permanately out of my life. These were some of my favorite foods

3, I am embarrassed to admit it but a friend of mine had the surgery before me and she still ate badly, just smaller portions and was losing so I thought "heck I can do that easy" (by the way, she later had a slipped band, had it replaced and has been stalled for 15 months, so she wasnt the best example for me).

4. Fast food (which was a major % of my diet before out of convenience) is no longer plausible and is not enojoyable because most of it is really difficult to eat.

Why I would do it all over again knowing what I do now:

1. The old habits that I mentioned above (fast food, over eating, white carbs, etc) had to be removed from my life. I just didn't have the will power to do it. My band forced me to get rid of them.

2. Since my surgery I learned about the ds. I'll admit I have day dreamed periodically about malabsorption that would allow me to eat fattier, but I am extremely happy to know that for the most part I am doing this one my own and that my anatomy is still intact. Thats not a put down on other procedures, it is just a personal preference.

Best of luck making your decision!

I had lost all my weight on low carb before and for whatever stupid reason went off, lost control because of constant cravings and started gaining.
I looked to the band to keep me from ever being able to overeat or binge on sugar and carbs again..I will always have to control what I eat..the band just controls how much..since I've been banded I haven't had any sweets or high carb foods, I'm losing the weight and I feel more in control over my eating than I ever have in my life.
RNY was just too much to worry about for me..
I feel like even if there are some risks involved with a band..many of those risks can be avoided if I do things right and follow band rules..
I'm very happy I made this decision.

My husband and I chose lapband because it was less invasive.  None of the plumbing was cut open or re-routed.  Our anatomies are exactly the same as they always were and if you take this band out, I'll be the same as God made me.
Also, I want to get pregnant in the future.  I like the idea that my band can be unfilled for the pregnancy and then refilled after delivery.

I feel the same way about why the band is right for me..  I really like that it can be removed then everything things goes back to the way it was... I don't like the idea of all the cutting and rearanging of my insides... Thanks again for all *****plied..

I had been undecided but leaning towards gastric bypass.  My husband wasn't as comfortable with t he risks he perceived.  Since I really needed his support and help, and after doing more research I decided on lapband.

First of all, I think this was a really great question to post.  The reason's why I choose to do the Lap Band were:

It does not alter your anatomy
It's reversable
It's not a invasive surgery, since it's laparoscopic
My insurance covered it
My surgery would take place in a surgery center and not the main hospital
I would get to go home the same day
Less time I would be off from work. I had my surgery on a Monday and was back at work on Thursday.

I think that this is one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself.

I hope this helps.

All exactly the same answers I'd have... is now the time I make a sarcastic comment about when people can return to sex?

I kid, I kid... ;-)
