Why Lapband?
I know a lot about diet and nutrition from all the years of dieting. I believed that I could control the QUALITY of foods I eat if the band would control the QUANTITY. For me it worked.
I'm stubborn and a type A personality that likes to be in control BUT I was a volume eater, an emotional eater. I just needed a tool that would not allow me to eat the huge portions I was used to.
I have carefully followed the rules, (at least I did for the first 9 months), and lost over 100 lbs. But yes, I have dramatically changed the quality of food I eat as well as the quantity. I believe It made a big difference for me on how fast I lost the weight. Plus I exercise moderately 3-5 times a week.
Best~

For myself, I didn't want to deal with losing hair, needed B12 shots, dumping syndrome and I needed portion control ( which I have not yet quite accomplished to my standards). Had 1 fill since getting my band in Nov/09. Hope to get another fill in April. Have restriction at times ( and not at the times I need it also ).

It comes back but it's freaky in the meantime.
I went to check on having a RNY and there were about 200 to 220 people in the room and when they got to the point that they said 1 person in 200 will die while having this surgery or with complications I got up and walked out. It was just not for me. About 3 years later I heard about the band and decided that this was the surgery I needed and would fit my lifestyle.
I am a volume eater and needed something to help me with that. Sweets and all that were not my problem, I just needed something to help me with my portions and that is exactly what the band has done for me.
I have gone from 280 lbs. to 130 lbs. and I have been at this weight for about 2 years now.
Research all the surgeries and decide what is best for you and don't let anyone talk you into anything you don't feel comfortable with. Good luck on your search!!

am just worried about slippage/erosion and all the other bad things I read about...
Reading a message board can make you feel things always go wrong! Poeple post when they have problems or worries more than they do when things are just going smoothly. Things do go wrong! They can with any surgery and with any wls. But many "complications" are minor and can be handled by taking care when eating. Serious complcaitojsn are actually much more rare than anti-band people would have you think! One eprson says that 1 in 4 band are removed in the first five years! These stats include earlier bands implanted using a now obsolete technique.
In Europe, a large scale study found that only 2.6% of bandsters get slips (and many of those can be sorted out without surgery) and only 1% get erosion.

I've had two Crapbands and I wish I would have revised over to something else instead of staying with my Crapband.
Now that you have asked bandsters "Why Lapband" it would behoove you to ask this question on all the other surgery boards.
I would really caution you against taking advice from anyone who is less then a few years out of whatever their chosen surgery was. Some people are very passionate about their surgery choice. I'd be more interested in facts myself.
I'm not interested in starting a surgery war here. This is just my opinion and you asked for it. I am 90 lbs down from my original weight of 256 and I am NOT a Crapband fan.
