Hey There! For any women over 5 ft 10 inches tall...
Hi Everyone!
I have a couple of comments and questions...
For any of you women out there who are really tall. Please tell me:
- Your height
- Your age
- Your goal weight
- Your current weight
- The reason why you chose that goal weight
Being so tall, I have always strived to be really thin. Somehow in my mind I think I look more feminine the thinner I am...
My weight loss journey has made me take a real hard look at myself and my personal self image. I would like to know if any of you also want to have a very low BMI and want to be very thin.
I am 6 feet tall. My original goal was 140 lbs. I have acheived that goal or near it, several times in my life. But I never ever maintain my weight loss.
I recently increased my goal from 140 lbs to 150 lbs. I did this for a couple of reasons:
1) So that I could maintain between 140 - 150 lbs rather than below 140 lbs
2) So that I would feel like a success anywhere under 150 lbs
3) It seemed like a more realistic goal and easier to acheive and maintain
I secretly would love to fluctuate around 140 lbs give or take a few pounds up or down, but I also don't want to set myself up for failure.
I so look forward to your honest and candid replies.
All the best on your weight loss journey!
Cindy

Hey, Cindy!
I am not as tall as you, and "only" 5'10". I was 376 when I started my journey. I set my goals very small, so as NOT to set myself up for another failure: 10 pounds, then another ten, then 50, etc.
Keep in mind that your final goal number will probably include a certain amount of loose skin, so if you weight 150, your actual weight under that sagginess might be 140 or below.
When I got down to the 150 range at MY height (had developed a hiatal hernia then a slip, had my band replaced and gained some weight back in that debacle) , I felt I was too thin. While I would like to be about 10 pounds less than I am now, I am below my goal, so I'm happy. My "final goal" was to be below 195, which was what I weighed when I graduated from high school. I am still very comfortably below that number and have been maintaining for about 4-1/2 years.

I am close at 5'9", I am 35 years old, my personal goal is 175, my current is 350 (getting banded tomorrow),
I chose that weight because it was my in college and I think it is attainable. 165 would probably be better and officially take me to a normal weight. At 165-175, I was a size 14 and looked darn good. Back then I thought I was fat, but looking back, I was beautiful. If I had loved myself at 175, maybe I would not have dieted my way up to 350.
I do not want to be thin, I want to be a brickhouse!
I think it is different for me, in the black culture, a lot of men are attracted to women in the 12-16 range. I think my husband would panic if I got under a 12. I was a 14 when we met. I have never caught him looking at a thin woman, but a woman who looks like she should be in a Lane Bryant advertisement would get him to sneak a glance.

Cindy,
I understand how you feel. I was always the tallest one in high school and also weighed the most because I had a good 6 inches on my friends. :)
-I am 5'10''
-I am 28 years old.
-My current weight is 275 (down 35 lbs in 5 weeks!) :)
-My goal is 180
-I chose to be banded because I weighed my options and thought it was the best for me.
My doctor told me (according to the height/weight chart) that I should weigh about 145. I told him I will not do the surgery if that is his goal for me. I have always had curves and I enjoy them! :) That is part of being a woman. I do not want to be too skinny. I told him that my goal was 180.
I think 140 could be a little too thin for you, but that is just my opinion. If that is where you feel happy and comfortable. We all had this surgery to feel better about ourselves; and if that is where you feel best... then that is best for you. :)
Good luck.
Kate

Always one of the problems with WLS is picking a goal weight and body dysmorphia issues. Someone said once at 40? 50? (whatever) do you really think you're going to weigh what you weighed in high school, etc. So, my goal is to be a healthy (healthier?) weight I can maintain.
But, that's not what you asked so here's my answer.
I'm short and wide but my daughter came from the completely different end of the gene pool.
She is:
- 5' 10" (might be 5' 11" by now)
- 16 years old
- athletic, 2 hours of exercise a day (part of her school program).
- 150 pounds
- a size 2 to 4 depending on the manufacturer
So, I'd say for an adult woman who's been obese something like 160-180 would be more than realistic. Obviously you should go for what works for you but don't get hung up on a number, especially if it is unrealistic.
Here's a photo, she's the one on the left in the pink dress

Hi Cindy
I am 5' 10". I am 42 years old and I started out at 280 lbs. My surgery was Jan 2008.
I have lost total of 90 lbs and I am currently around 190 give or take a few.
I am smaller on the top than bottom-- have always been that way. I originally wore a size 28 on the bottom and 2x on the top.
Currently wear a size 14 misses on the bottom and a medium on the top.
I have photos in my profile-- I can't seem to figure out how to post with an Apple computer.
My goal is to be around 180 which would be 100 lbs gone. I am happy where I am at right now, but darn it-- I want the 100 gone. I will eventually get there. Like I said-- I am happy where I am.
I currently seem to maintain easily where I am right now, but I just need to buckle down and get back to basics to get the last 10 lbs gone. Since my top is smaller- my collar bones are really pronounced and I think under the 180 mark would be too small?? It would be nice to see at some point.
Hope this info helps-- good luck on your journey

Hi Everyone,
Thank you so much for your responses. I am getting so many amazing responses. I am going to compile some of the information and some of the best weight related sentences and post them here.
I wish I could take the time to respond to each of you, however the number of responses is incredible. The fact that I posted this to the Main Forum and to each of the WLS Forums in the reason why.
Thanks again, I have now received over 23 responses, once I am pretty sure they are done, I will let you guys know the stats.
In the meantime, if you are as curious about this as I was, please visit the other forums, I posted each with the same topic line... you will find that there is a wide spectrum of dream weights for us tall folks and lots of reasons why...
All the best to each of you!

Hi Cindy!
I'm 5'10", 47 years old and started this journey at 330. Today I weigh 216.7. My first goal is to get to 195. Once there my stretch goal is 175. According to the BMI chart, which doesn't consider age, I should weigh 153 to have a healthy BMI. I just can't see myself at that weight and I don't think at 47 I would look very good that thin.
I'll be really happy at 195 and thrilled at 175! The last time I weighed 175 was 1985.

Hi
I'm 5'10, started out at 298 and am currently 143. My original goal was to be at 165 then I kept losing and then I thought I would stop at 150 but lost some more. I would like to stay at this weight. I already get a ton of comments that I look too skinny and to not lose anymore weight. My loose skin isn't bad at all but I feel it will get worse if I lose anymore. Everyone's body type is different, so it's hard to set a number goal based on other people. I hope this helps!
