Full liquids?

I am only 5 days post op and I'm on full liquids, but don't know exactly what that means?  I've just been drinking protein shakes and water but wonder if I can have other things too like applesauce or mushed up beans?  I know each surgeon has different requirements so I was wondering what your post-op diet consists of.

Thanks,
Amy

Sugar free jell-o and sugar free popsicles. My doctor's version of liquids was pretty much anything that was virtually liquid (so I was able to have sugar free pudding and a dollop of SF Cool Whip).
Chicken broth is good. Just keep an eye out on the sodium levels. I drank the broth from Chicken Noodle soup and Beef Vegetable soups.

I am two weeks post op.  I was struggling to make my full liquids yummy.  The broth right out of the can tasted gross.  I ended up getting raman noodle packets and throwing away the noodles and using the broth mix and water to make a much more tasty version of beef or chicken broth.

According to my surgeon, applesauce and mushed up beans are NOT full liquids.  I purchased some soup from my favorite restaurant, threw away the stock, and just ate the broth.  Homemade is much better than canned.  I also had skim milk with sugar free syrup, and jellow with a smidge of cool whip.

I was able to have applesauce during my "full liquid" stage, but could not have cooked beans until the "soft foods" stage at two weeks post op.  On full liquids I had SF Carnation Instant Breakfast or cream of wheat for breakfast, and a lot of different low fat creamy soups for lunch and dinner.  Protein drinks, yogurt, sf pudding, sf popsicles etc. throughout the day when I was hungry.

The "full Liquid" diet my doctor put me on came with a list. It includes:

Beverages:
Skim milk
Water
Crystal light
No sugar added instant breakfast

Breads and Cereal:
Well cooked cereals (cream of wheat, Cream of rice, Farina or cornmeal) thinned down with skim milk

Vegetables and Fruit:
Tomato juice
V8 juice
broth
creamed soups (strained of any chunks)
fruit juices

Miscellanous Foods:
Sugar free Jell-o
Yogurt
Sugar Free Popsicles
Ice cream (low-fat, low or no sugar added)
Protein drinks

I hope this gives you some ideas.
Good luck!
Shelli

Full liquids means anything that you could suck through a straw, although you don't use one.

My surgeon requires 3 weeks of full liquids (this is the end of my second week) which is protein shakes equivalent to 60-80 grams of protein a day, non-calorie liquids like water, crystal lite etc. to equal 64 oz or more.  Jello, cottage cheese, pudding etc. are considered soft foods and they come after the 3 weeks of full liquids.

I love won-ton soup broth - that savory taste has saved me on many a day because I can't stand bouillon or canned broth.  Just don't have too much.

The bright side?  I have lost 13 lbs.

I had full liquids for two wks before & two post op.  For me, it was broths (I strained Progresso soups), low fat cream soups (Trader joe's has a great latin black bean & roasted tomato), yogurts, jello, juices, milk and very thin cream of wheat.  Applesauce & mashed/pureed anything is considered pureed foods and will be your next step.  If you look on the right hand side of this page, you'll see some links for Post-Surgery Diet, Nutrition and Exercise.  That will have a whole list of info for you!
Congrats on your surgery!
