Borderline Abnormal EKG
Well, my PCP office just called to tell me they rejected my surgery clearance. They said I had a Borderline Abnormal EKG.
Ugh, did I just get hit with a ton of bricks?
Im 2 weeks away from my dream...I have been fantasizing about this surgery and frankly it has been my lifeline as this year has been horrific.
I have an appt in the morning for a 2D Echo. My final surgical consult, NUT counseling and meeting with the anest. is Monday.
Please tell me Im not the only one or my chances have not been totally crushed.
Thanks.

This happened to me too.
What they don't tell you is
1. being heavy throws off EKG
2. Big boobs can effect the readings ..(if they cant get the leads correct).
I had to have an emergency echo the day before surgery, because my PCP was adamant that I was cleared for surgery....
Well, as I was sitting in my johnny waiting for surgery that day...I found out that I got cleared.
Talk about stress....i was soo mad!!
Anyway, I have to keep a copy of my EKG with me in my wallet...god forbid something horrible happens, I can prove that my abnormal EKG is normal for me!

Don't worry too much. EKGs are finicky at best. A lot depends on several outside factors: the tech doing the EKG, the leads, whether the contact pads are placed appropriately and if the sticky on them is sticking well, oily skin, big books and chest hair can affect them as well! The list is endless. I did these at a clinic for truck driver physicals and hairy chests are murder! My hubby fixes these as part of his job and most time he is called in for repairs it is usually operator error.
I know it is nerve wracking and I will keep you in my prayers that the echo comes out well and surgery continues as planned. :)

Sometimes abnormal to the doctors is a persons normal.
For example my husband had to go for a complete and thorough physical for work. They did an EKG it came back abnormal. They immediately set up an appointment for a stress test. He went did the test and the cardiologist looked at him and said why are you even here. Your heart is perfect.
A few months passed and his normal doctor did another EKG and it was abnormal. He wanted to send hubby for another stress test. We explained what had just happened a few months earlier.
The doc called the Job Doc and the cardiologist and they came to the conclusion that my hubbies abnormal EKG was normal for him. They have given him a EKG printout to carry with him in case he is ever in an accident and unconscious they won't freak out.
So while a abnormal EKG can in some people be bad news it. For others it is just being different from the norm.
So...I went in this morning for my 2D Echo. I asked the Tech if she thought I was gonna have a heart attack or not...laughing of course. She said I looked fine. Not that she has the final say or not, but it is helping me feel a little better.
Just wanted to post an update. I should know by Monday if Im still good to go!
Keep your fingers crossed for me!!
THANKS!
