I had surgery yesterday. Occasionally I get the feeling like I need to burp but it wont come up, it just hurts. Also, when I hiccup it hurts like hell. Is this normal? Any suggestions?

Katie,
I totally had the same thing happen!  Yes, it does suck pretty bad.  I called them "fake burps"!  Now, just over two weeks out, it's better.  Sometimes I'll get the burp thing if I "eat" slouched over and then I stand up.  I can at least burp now, kinda sick but.....it feels good to be able to burp again!  So, I wouldn't worry about it unless it lasts for more than a couple of weeks.

Totally normal.  I would do this thing I have called a "hiccurp" where I would do a hiccup followed immediately by a burp.  These occurred for about a week after surgery and hurt each time but then it stopped happening.  Normal hiccups and burps also no longer hurt.  Hang in there...it will get better.

Congrats on your surgery!

I had surgery Tuesday, and the same thing happened to me! Walking around helped me to burp, but the hiccup/burp didn't have a way to get rid of, they didn't allow me anything to drin****il after the GI scan the next morning. I tried doing the gorilla bang on my chest, and that tended to help get the burps out, and thought if it didn't work I'd ask a nurse to do the baby burp thing on my back! I still get the hiccups occasionally, and the burping is still regular. Nancy

My saving grace was GasX chewable tablets.  They tasted pretty good as well.  Next time when you hiccup, hug a pillow to your stomach and chest.  This will support those sore stomach muscles.  Eventually, your muscles will no longer be sore and hiccuping will not be a problem.

Hang in there,
Amy

Thanks so much everyone! It's so nice to not have to bug my doc every time something weird or painful happens. This forum is wonderful!

Hello,

I'm having the painful hiccups and obstructed burps too. But since I am 3 days post op, it was much less today...it will get better - just believe!

I had surgery yesterday too... and I am having the same problem... Gas X has been my saving grace and I have been taking it every 4 hrs to keep things under control.  Moving around has really helped too....Thank God this goes away soon... Hang in there.... I know it hurts and it is tough but we'll get through this......
