Hi,

Day 5 of pre-op and all I can say is major headaches with protein powder.

The most tolerated is Jay Robb's egg something protein powder.

It must be the artificial ingredients.

Anyone else have this problem and know of a better choice?

TIA

Check for artifical sweeteners.  They kill me every time.  Sucralose is the big one that they are using now (splenda).

I had a headache for the first few days and come to find out it was from the carbohydrate withdrawal.......I was doing the atkins shakes and it has a very very low carb count.

I also had a hard time because I don't do artificial sweeteners well, but the headache was from no carbs........it did leave eventually but made things difficult because pain relievers don't work...

If you gave up caffine it could be that also............... both carb and caffine withdrawals will cause a temporary headache.......

good luck!

Hey there! I beleive the headaches are from sugar, carb and basically food withdrawal. I was on a two week liquid diet pre op and thought I would die!! Not only from the headaches but from the lack of chewing. I lost over 20 lbs though and the surgery went smoothly. Just think about the rewards versus the yucky side affects you are having. I used the Genisoy protein sold in Wal mart pre op now I use the Whey protein in the HUGE containers...sold in Walmart. Can't think of the name but it is chocolate, fruit punch and vanilla. Mix them up some...make ice cappucinos and strawberry, banana of chocolate shakes!!! Yummy when you get the hang of it. Do a search on protein shake ideas and have fun with it!

Only 12 lbs to goal

Highest: 365    Pre-op:  354   Current: 257     Goal: 245

It's not from the carb withdrawals.  I am fine until I have a shake.  Within 10 mins my head is killing me.

It's going to be the aspartame/other artificial sweetners.

I need something without all that crap. lol

Hi, I am on my pre-op liquid diet and I found a protein powder that is low in calories and high in protein.  I couldn't find any listing of an artificial sweetener in it. It has 110 calories per serving and 22 g protein per serving and 1 g sugar, and it doesn't give me headaches.
It is called Max Protein, and I bought it at GNC. Hope this helps.
Good luck, I'm right there with you, I get so hungry in the afternoon, I could kill someone..lol

I have to accept the extra calories and eat the stuff with sugar.  Early stages that meant regular popsicles and pudding and jello, etc.  I also use protein powder that has sugar instead of sweetener.  I like the Kashi Go Lean protein powder in vanilla and chocolate.  Don't use it too often because it does have sugar but in a protein pinch it is great (and it tastes good).  The SlimFast high Protein is also sugar but doesn't taste as good.
