Surgery has been cancelled

You're going to get a lot of different opinions on this. The best advice I can give to you is to do your research and talk to your doctor. I started out on this path with my heart set on lapband and was dead set against RNY. Nine months, many tests (including an emergency surgery) and 3 doctors later, I'm having RNY. I wish I could do the lap band - it's not meant for me between reflux, a hiatal hernia and the fact that I'm prone to infection. Some people are brave enough to try lapband with these problems and make it work. I'm 47 and I'm a SISSY  I also trust my doctor immensely and the decision was made with all 3 (hubby, myself and dr.) talking about my health problems. But that's me, you have to decide what's right for you

The one thing I do know to be true, lapband people ROCK  I've known since June I wasn't going to have lapband and I'm still hanging out here and WELCOME to be here too

Good luck with your decision

I had it before my surgery for years, but after my surgery I never had it again!  My surgeon repaired my Hiatal Hernia which is what he said was the probable cause of my reflex.  He said with a Hiatal Hernia that the diaphragm squeezes the stomach causing acid to flow up.  I think a lot of my stomach was up through my diaphragm.  He fixed it.

I took Aciphex which kept my reflux at bay so I guess my esophagus wasn't all that inflamed?.  Maybe he will have you take medicine to give your esophagus a rest for a while and then will be able to do the surgery once the inflammation clears up.

Take care!!

hmmm... I have had that problem since the day of surgery. Always clearing my throat. doesn't hurt, no heartburn. but i did notice it after surgery. i thought it would go a way, or that my because of my allergies and the band, that's the way it would be. I'll have to ask my dr about it tho.
I'm sorry to hear this is happening to you Citychic, I'm sure you will find what's right for you tho. Trust your dr.
Blessings.

I have very bad acid reflux for several years. I take prescriptions. Doc had no problem with me having that. I had lapband surgery 8/4.
Good luck.

My suspicion is that they will want to put you on a PPI for a while to see if that will calm things down.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Thank you for all your responses!  I have a tendancy to catastophize things and you all have reminded me that this isn't the end of the world and not even the end of the road for lap band necessarily.  Once again I'm reminded of what a great group of people are on this board!

I'm not going to give up.  I'll let you know what the surgeon says when I meet with him on sept 9.

Hi,

I was banded three weeks ago today.  Before banding, I had really bad acid reflux.  My doc did an upper GI and found that I had a hiatus hernia.  This did not stop the surgery - he just fixed the hiatus hernia and put in the band right after in the same surgery!

I feel fine so far (except for a sore port site, but that is a totally different issue).

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Unfortunately, I had to delete this message due to privacy concerns.

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!
