Hey Dr. C.  Can you please comment on this "band popping open" post.  It sure seems unlikely.  ETA - Sorry I didn't see the post above when I posted this, but I will leave it just in case you want the link. Thanks so much, Susan http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/lapband/a,messageboard/act ion,replies/board_id,5359/cat_id,4959/topic_id,3639143/

That's crazy...it doesn't happen.  I've done almost 1500 bands and have never even heard of it.

Hi there Dr. Can pregnancy dislodge the port or disrupt the band in any way? I'm about 18 weeks pregnant and 2 yrs banded. All of the sudden my port is giving me a stabbing, pinching sensation. It really hurts! But only when I move... Thank You! Linsey

Linsey, The changes from pregnancy are probably putting some strain on the sutures holding your port down.  We've had lots of bandster babies in our practice and haven't had any major port issues.

Dr curry ,i know you have  been asked  many odd  questions so here is another one to add to the list . Is it possible to "pop" your band? a patient  posted this on june 12 at 3:59pm saying a medical doctor had many lapband patients who "popped open"their bands by overeating  This is a new one for me I have heard of band slippage, pouch and esophagus dilation, major pbing, bands, placed incorrectly and so on, but popping open?  I did read 2 years ago about a patient who says her band came loose and had to be repaired which was a defective bandI have actually read a couple of times about defective bands coming loose but not because of overeating .,also  is this common as this poster says it is? Thank you for your reply, wish this reply could be a sticky for all to read ..

Wow!  Glad to know I'm not the only one with a question about the "Popped Band" post!

Dear Dr. Curry, I am 2 months out from lap-band surgery and got my second fill yesterday, for 1cc.  I got 1cc for my first fill also.  I asked yesterday what size band I have and was told "standard".  I hear of other patients getting way more in their fills, and on the boards saying "gee, it doesn't sound like you're getting much, why only 1cc?".  I am suspecting that the doctor goes by each individuals weight, how fast or slow you're losing, what and how you've been eating since last visit and probably other variables.  I do feel restriction with solids, but since my fill yesterday have not eaten anything blended or solid yet.  I imagine my limit will be less than it was before.  I was a low BMI patient but had/have a lot of co-morbidities (osteoarthritis, joint/disc problems, hypertension, edema, depression, asthma...) So...to sum up:  Are there different criteria for different types of lap-band patients that doctors use for the amount of saline they use at fill time.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

There are different starting amounts based on surgeon and patient.  If you have an AP standard, which it sounds like you do, then 2cc is just about right for your first fill.  That's what we always did before we got our fluoro machine so that we can customize the first fill to each patient.
