Hello my name is Michelle and I am 22 years old, I have been wanting to have the lap-band surgery for a long time. My gyn doctor has recently sent a letter to my insurence telling them how much I need this surgery. Last year I had a major surgery on my left overy. She found  a pelvic mass the size of 17 x 15 cm from the time it was found in June of 2007 till my surgery in July of 07 it had grown 15 to 16 cm larger. it was noted to be benign. In January I had another ultra sound done and they found a small complex cyst on my right overy, this is being treated by medication for now unless it grows larger. I am wondering will all of this cause me not to be able to have the surgery. My doctor told me that unless I lost the weight the cysts and my insulin levels will never go away, I never want to go through that surgery again. I have tried diet and excerise for almost a year and a half all I keep doing is gaining weight not loosing. I am getting very frusterated of what to do anymore. please let me know what you think. I am tired of doctors telling me how bad I need to loose weight but no one will help me much...  thank you Michelle
Michelle, If the mass was benign there is no reason that it should interfere with you getting a band.

Dr. Curry, I am concidering having the lap-band surgery with a BMI of 40.5. I posted on another board that was not a weightloss board and a former lap-band patient had strong warnings not to do it because she and MANY others all had erotion of the stomach. She was practically begging me not to have it done. I have been on the board for about a week reading lots of info, but I am not really hearing much about erotion problems. What is the percentage of people who have erotions? Also I can't find any info on the percentage of people who actually KEEP their weight off. I heard on another board (not here) that most of the people gain their weight back.  Thanks Bonnie

Bonnie, We have done 1400 bands and haven't had any erosions, usually you see a rate of less than 1% quoted.

Dr Curry, How often should I schedule fills? Can I have a fill within a week and a half of each other or is it dependant on the doctor office? Even if the doctor will give the fill back to back, what is a reasonable time frame to have another fill?

It is dependant on the doctor, we usually recommend 4 weeks, certainly no closer than 2 weeks.

Hi Dr Curry, Hope you can help me.  I was banded a year and a half ago.  Presently my bamd is empty.  I have had problems with vomiting at night.  I got diagnosed with acid reflux.  I have had my band xrayed on numerous occassions and have been told it is fine.  I then went to a gastroenterologist and he did a gastroscopy and found that I have a sliding hiatus hernia in my oespophagus, the area around the band is vey swollen, gastritus, duodenitis as well as being tested positive for helicobacter pylori.   The gastroenterologist says I need to have the band out and then he can treat everything else.  My band doctor is saying I must leave the band and just take some antibiotics.  I seem to be stuck in the middle.  Am now reaching the stage where I am just managing to keep down liquids, as my throwing up at night has become very violent.  Nobody seems to want to take responsibility.  Is there anything you can suggest? Many thanks j
I have gained and lost the same ten pounds so many times over and over again my cellulite must have déjà vu.

If you are having significant problems with an empty band, there is a pretty good chance it is going to have to come out.  I would try H pylori treatment first, but there is a low chance of success.

I have a question..I am scheduled for lapband June 12,  I went and had all preop done yesterday.   Everything went fine but the upper gi showed that i had a narrowed duodenum.  That is what the preop doc said , I havent heard from my doc yet to determine if my surgery is cancelled...Is this a problem that would cancel my surgery  and what exactly is this?
